took an old (94 l-plate) VR6 out today with a view to buy, only got 86k on clock, respectable owners, drove like new, no rattles & very smooth but didn't seem very powerfull, although saying that didn't take it over 4500rpm.

I know they are supposed to have 179bhp, but what should I have expected?

like the car loads, very good condition etc, but timing chain snapped at 80k & full engine rebuild after with all reciepts for £1300, apparently this only happened to a few VR6's, any thoughts??

The owner has got every service stamped from new bieng the only owner, had new brake lines also recently.

any comments please???

Golf or 'Rado?

Sounds good to me, and the timing chain just sounds like bad luck. But with all the receipts etc, sounds like a nice one.

Very few about these days..

They are not quick!! in fact I think you'll find quite sluggish even compared to say a PDI 130!! But very smooth to drive & they do a make a nice noise.

I was quite surprised when I first drove one, they are all about torque & avery smooth curve at that.

They eat the miles on the Mway.
My wifes had hers for 3 years, done the French Alps every year with ease.
Not to be confused with a being in the same genus as the Mk2 GTI 16valve, they're a very different beast.

don't confuse the manic on /off torque of the 130 vs the smooth ongoing torque of the vr6, the vr6 won't even start to take off until past 4k revs, when the diesel will be ready for a change of gear

Large engines with multi cyllinders can *feel* deceptively slower than they really are. But this is only because they are sooo much smoother!

The main stumbling block for ultimate performance from a VR is the freakishly tall final drive!

That sort of gearing and engine is superb for long trips though. My R32 was good across Europe. Aside from the slightly droning engine & exhaust note inside. If you prefer cross country hooning I can thoroughly recommend the R32 suspension set up too.

cheers for all the comments, had a better look today & bought it tonight, but it will need new brakes all round within 3000 miles & 12 month service is due.

Gold btw, not Corrado.

any sugestions on pad type? I will stick to normal discs.

I also noticed the long gearing, specially when I got back in the Tiv.

If it had an engine rebuild 6K miles ago it will not be properly run in and loosened up.... also as others have said due to the smooth power delivery it doesn't 'feel' as quick as it actualy is...

My advice would be to get down to German ans Swedish and buy all OE stuff.
You'll get new brakes all round for peanuts.
Enjoy the car.
