M3 Evo Vanos removal

Quick question.
If you were removing your E36 M3 Evo Vanos unit (car will be used on track days, driveability is not an issue)
Do you need to change the original DME or can you still use it and if so.
I know you can do it on the 3.0 M3 as it uses the cam sensor to determine its algorythms so the DME remains, but what of the Evo?
I appreciate there are a band of brothers who espouse the wonders of variable valve timing to the cars drivability etc, but dont want the thread hijacked with this aspect.
Just the cold hard fact on what needs to be done and how
