Another wheel thread I'm afraid.

I am wanting to change my alloys for something a bit more up to date and fancy 17" all round.

Obviously at the moment it is shod with 15's front and 16's rear.

My question is does moving to 17's all round make a difference to:
1. Stance?
2. Performance?

Anyone done this?

What are the affects?

Cheers

Rich

I had 17's alround on my old Griff, which i thought look very nice and not that far off standard Estorils in design. The ride was OK but a bit harsh but I did have nitrons on as well.

I'm interested in this as well. Was looking at the SP12's in 17 and 18" but not sure how practical this would be?! I'm guessing that as long as the overall diameter is kept the same, i.e. dropping to lower profile tyres then it wouldn't upset the speedo etc.

I changed to 17s on mine and would certainly recommend it as long as you get offets right. I think it helps the stance and appearance no end and as long as you get tyres with enough tyrewall flex, if really does not harm the ride much at all, in fact rear grip on mine is significantly better.

Offsets- yes I was talking to an alloy place yesterday and he was saying that I need to provide this so that we get the set up right.
Thanks

The widths and offsets- (not offets - sorry long day!!)for mine were originally:

Front 7J * 15 ET25
Rear 7.5J * 16 ET33

The stud pattern is 4 * 108

You can have a play with what works on here: www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp

I went for 17 * 7.5J with an effective offset of 28 all round but have spaced the rears with a 5mm hubcentric spacer .

This is exactly what I did. Offsets and all the techy bits to worry about are taken care of in the wheel design. I find the lower profile tyres have no adverse effects on ride comfort (though arguably they should) and roadholding is much improved. The car sits like a rock on motorways. Highly recommended.

Hi Nick, I thought you had same wheels as mine [17"RS] which are ET35 offset as opposed to the 28 you stated. PS did I see your car for sale? sad day if so, though good for someone. Mac.

Don’t forget that 7.5 inch is not really wide enough for a 245 tyre. The lower tire profile the less acceptable it is. As well and the offsets and clearance issues you should look at the recommended and acceptable range of rim widths for the tyres you plan to fit. Most manufacturers recommend an 8 or 8.5 rim for 245 rubber.

Hi Mac - you are absolutely correct - mine were an effective offset of 28 as I spaced them by 7mm originally.

You are also correct about the sale frown The new owner picked her up on Wednesday but at least it stays local. 2 young kids mean it just did not get used enough....
