civic vti or starlet turbo
Discussion
The starlet will feel quicker due to power delivery, but I should imagine real world stock for stock they'd be pretty similar in terms of performance. The starlet would also be easier to live with day to day as you dont need to wring its neck to get it moving, that said I do like the B16a'd civic/CRX's.
I had a UK EG6 VTi and it was a great car, went like stink with basic breathing mods and would hit the top of fourth gear with ease
Starlet would be easier to get a nice power hike from given its a turbocharged engine, but then it will cost you more to insure as Starlet Turbos are all imports.

Depending on the insurer the Starlet can be all the way upto group 17 thanks to its import status. The CC doesnt make a blind bit of difference I'm afraid. Add some mods on and it can get pricey
A UK VTi is group 14. Get some quotes, its the only way you'll find out.
To put it in perspective when I was getting quotes on imported Charade GTxx's compared to UK GTti, both 1 litre engines, the quotes on the import GTxx were double the UK GTti.
Having not driven a Starlet I cant comment on their handling, but I believe they have torsion bar rear suspension which is a bit aged nowawdays, whereas the Civic has more modern independent rear suspension.

performance wise is there alot of diffence between the 1.8 vti and the 1.6 vti,The 1.8 seems to be more prestige comes with leather, etc. i seen some pics of starlet turbos and there only have 2 seats at the back....:
1.8 is for the saloon, 1.6 for the hatch. Depends what you like really?
I'd prefere the saloon, bit more of a Q car.
The civic will be more reliable, but as said, you won't get as much power from mods.
Starlets are cheap, and funnily enough, alot are bought and used and abused by people your age who rag the nuts off it. Like some little scrote near me. Wouldn't like to dream what condition that is in as he boosts it from cold which isn't good for the tubby!
Something to consider when looking at starlets, gonna have to find a minter, so the lower end of the pricing is not worth considering IMO. Not sure on the value of the VTIs (Can I call them Type Rs please? cos thats what they are in Japan!)

No they aren't. They are SiR's in Japan, and there is no EG6 Type R.The Type R EK9 is a different animal entirely, 185ps, hand ported head, lighter valves, seam welded chassis, short ratio gearbox etc etc, hence why they still fetch silly money.
Thats not to say the SiR isn't a good car, the Type R is just a step up, thats all.
A decent UK EG6 VTi in standard condition is worth about £2k, but I'd rather spend the extra and get an SiR imported from Japan for around the £2500 mark, mainly because alot of them come with the optional helical differential and air con.
