Any one had any experience with this? I think a chipped 335d would actually give the new M3 a run for its money in the real world - and return 30mpg!! Plus save £20k

Not worth even comparing the two imho, completely different cars, one is a high revving, sharp, M car and the other is a fast motrorway mile cruncher.

Have you considered a 335i, tuned these will reach 365bhp no problem at all and 400 bhp with free flowing exhausts and a different map?
Seriously quick car, will do 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds with the basic tune and still return 25+ mpg all day long and see 34mpg on a run without hanging around.

With the current price of Diesel I would go for the M3, I have a 330D and the bloody thing is drinking Derv at a prodigious rate.

..surely not as bad as 18mpg? My E46M3 averages 23mpg but I have heard that the new one is well under 20mpg.

Although high reving the new M3 also has serious V8 grunt low down - makes the prev M3 look positively weedy in that area. Throw in all the M car's other advantages and the 335d - great car that it is - wouldn't see which way the M3 went.

There are various ways to look at this as other posters have observed - but to pick up on one point from the original post - "in the real world".

Now to me, that includes the daily grind to and from work, the weekend trips with the family, the holidays fully laden and not just the track day or the blast down your favourite B road.

When you consider all of those, and assuming fuel costs are an issue then the two are pretty close indeed.

The 335d is never going to beat the M3 round a track as it is not designed to do that, the M3 is.

That said, I still think it pretty amazing that the DMS chipped 335d managed to out-launch all-comers at the recent "Fighting Torque" event, from memory that was the first 1/4 mile!

I have a 335d, have driven the M3 (unfortunately it was mostly in traffic!) and am currently seriously considering the 335, diesel has been a novelty for me but I am missing the exhaust note of a petrol car somewhat...

6.2 litres and 500 bhp is boring is it??

I think it would be a great commuting car aswell, much better than the jerky manuals often found in M cars.

iT'S NOT the power, they are fine engines indeed and they probably ahve the smoothest autos about and I believe the new car is a real step up from the old, BUT, they are a different car to the M's and is why M's do not have auto boxes, anything with an auto box is not designed from the outset to be an out and out drivers car and that is my opinion,

I agree with this- the 335i tuned would be devastatingly quick, quicker than an M3 in a straight line I would think (E46, not 92) and more comfortable. Or M5 if you want the real deal.
