Now on both sides, windows slow to close and sometimes make a 'clonk' at the top of the stroke.
Is this to do with the motors or the guides? I suspect the latter as the glass can be rocked from side to side when the window is halfway down.
How big a job is it to remove the door card and replace the offending articles?

Do they clonk/creak once they're closed?
Mine do this - as if they're still trying to push up. A well placed elbow normally stops the creaking noise.
My indy advised it may just be down to the voltage regulator for the window safety drop not having been reset properly the last time the battery was disconnected.

The creak when the windows are closed is most likely the door seal. I had this on my E46 320d and it drove me up the wall. Eventually I got a tip from a forum about cleaning the door seals (the very outer part which is fuzzy on one side) to remove any silicon, then wiping it over with BMW rubber care stuff. Blissful silence (though it can come back after a few weeks) It just became part of the car washing routine for me.

Top tip, thanks - but not the remedy I was hoping for, unfortunately.
In the course of cleaning the fuzzy bits and doing a bit of testing, I can now see that the window is not rising straight (although it drops perfectly). When rising, the glass slopes towards the rear so the rear edge of the window doesn't rise parallel to the door frame. The top rear corner therefore 'digs in' a bit which is obviously what is creating the friction and slowing the whole process down.
Pretty much certainly a guides issue then, it seems.

ing it up then.
