What should I do??
Discussion
Right, I have taken the Noble off the road for the winter. I am now in two minds what to do.
1) Sell the Noble and buy a Porker GT3 (mk2 996)
2) Throw a load of money at the Noble (new 500+ bhp engine, strenthen the gearbox, helix clutch, camber mod plus a few more bits and peices)
The porker is the sensible option, and I know it will be a very good car and (hopefully) bulletproof and have a better resale value.
Plus the other half likes them (which would make my life a lot easier!!)
Downside is.... well its a porsche. (and Joe Public will think I have stuck a big wing on a normal 911.
)
But....option two...

. Downside is that the money I spend uprating it is basically money down the drain come resale time.
So, what would you do and why?

Option 2, simply because I hate Porsches (also I can't spell it 1) Sell the Noble and buy a Porker GT3 (mk2 996)

I agree Peter, I have always disliked Porkers, but Dan took me out in his RS at bedford and I have to say it was a very impressive bit of Kit. Plus the ease of ownership has its appeal.

Then i go back to the Noble and a big smile results (through fairly rose tinted glasses TBH)

Might be a bit outta left-field... but
Sell the Noble and buy a nice powerful comfortable car for the road that you don't track.
Take your race licence, buy a clio cup
Owen, have lost intrest in track days TBH, have not done one for 18 months now.Sell the Noble and buy a nice powerful comfortable car for the road that you don't track.

Plus the Noble is too loud for most tracks now.
Use the car for alpine trips and hoons really and the odd MTR.
Ah, gotcha
Sounds a little bit like you fancy a change to me !
I know what you mean, been thinking similar things myself.. - you could modify the Noble to be as fast as almost anything, but making it proveably reliable is an entirely different story !...
No matter how much you modify it, it will still be the same car and the residual value for the upgrades will be zero. (or minus in a nervous market!). There's also the question of how much genuine on road performance increase you'll get for a big spend.
Maybe go in a different direction to where the other guys have gone throw a load of money at "comfort". maybe a big re-trim, a respray, new ICE, new gauges... make it mint and a great place to sit. At least that would both protect the residuals and give you a competitive advantage in a sale against similarly priced cars.
I know from a couple of go's in Wizz72's 996 GT3 that it is an awesome car and a fabulous all round machine. He does find it awful on the bumpy B roads though and is always pretty critical of the car in that department.

Not if you can stretch to an RS. I've been pleasantly surprised by the really positive public reaction. Absolutely no worse than the Noble, and in fact better in some ways.
I don't really agree with Biggriff's assertion about 996s having well known serious issues either. Especially not the GT3,GT2 or turbo which use the GT1 block.
If you get a sound car, the only things you'll want to change are brake pads and non-OEM disks once whatever is on there wears out.
I love mine and can't see myself selling it for a very long time.

You get used to that
I certainly did during the 10 day driving holiday we did this year with 4 other GT3s/a turbo & an m5.Biggriff said:
Dont agree on the Porsche's being reliable. The 996 has a number of well known and very expensive failings.
The cost of parts is stupid (£800 for a glove box lid) and servicing can be very expensive if you need parts.
Option says my heart, but I know you will go for the Porker.
What are the well known and very expensive failings on a 996 MKII GT3 then? The cost of parts is stupid (£800 for a glove box lid) and servicing can be very expensive if you need parts.

Consumable parts are cheap generally, can't comment on glovebox lids, but then I've never had to buy a glovebox lid for any of my cars anyway
A friend pays £35 per disk for the rears on his Boxster S, bargain. They have to be amongst the cheapest road cars to drive hard.Alex - get the GT3 IMO, variety is the spice of life and you've been there and done that with the Noble. The GT3 will get you browny points with the missus, be easier to live with, much more reliable, easier to get parts for, sound better and go pretty well too. And then bring it to the 'ring next year

Take her out in a GT3 before you say that. The number of people I've met that go 'Ooo I love <insert performance car of choice>. I'd love to be driven around in one!'. Take them out for a good drive around and..... 'I'm never getting in that car again. I hate it!'.Perhaps that's just my driving

Use your heart....

Maybe that's why i'm always broke?!!?
Option 2
I looked at a 997GT3 very recently.
£107,000. You'll lose £10 - 15K in the year AND have to finance the car (or ose interest on 107k) so add another £15K.
That's £30K for a year's motoring.
Alternatively spend £5 - 15K on the Noble and £12 on P1 or Ecurie (ask Joust it was his suggestion) and drive whatever you like when you're not overtaking everyone else in the Noble...
No brainer!

At that price you are paying over list for a 997 GT3 RS. Irrespective of me knowing where you could get one for less than that, I think he was suggesting spending 50k on a 996 mk2... Rather a different proposition!I looked at a 997GT3 very recently.

I would say that if you aren't interested in doing a decent number of trackdays, the 996 GT3 is probably the wrong car unless you really do like a demanding road drive all the time.
