I am going out there for a few days and may be tempted to take advantage of the strong pound and buy some new Canon L series lenses. Is there any problem with their warranty once back in this country (UK)?

Cheers Jonathan

I got a great deal in Hongkong, i have had no problems so no need to check warranty out.

Make sure you visit Aberdeen Harbour and go for dinner on the Jumbo floating restraunt.

I've never found a bargain in a shop in HK, yet ebay's HK sellers do great deals - weird. I always expected to come back from HK with a suitcase full of goodies but never found the prices to be much different to the uk.

The kit you buy in a real Nikon dealer in HK is the same as what you buy in a Nikon dealer in the UK, both have a worldwide warranty and do cost roughly the same. HK about 10-15% cheaper IMO.

The ebay stuff, stuff you buy in non-Nikon dealers in Aisa is NOT the same quality, it comes with no "proper" warranty and is often of 2nd or returned quality.

This is all as I've been told and having bought a 70-200mm VR when I lived in HK and had no issue with a UK repair, I think its pretty much true.

Find that very hard to believe. Must be an awful lot of people returning expensive pro-series lenses because that seem to be the most popular item than is imported.

In any case I buy mine from the US (BHPhotoVideo) and even without the current state of the pound they are close to half the UK price. I take my chances with VAT/duties - sometimes they get charged, other times the goods just arrive. Still cheaper anyway.

Just bought a Nikon 70-300mm VR lens from ebay, they give a no tax guarantee and package it up like its an item being returned under warranty bought from in the EU to avoid the tax, the lens itself is same you would get in the high street, not sure about warranty but is was nearly £150 cheaper.

How are you, long time no hear?

I have bought a few L's from Digital Rev on ebay. Great service etc etc.

But surely as you can claim the VAT you are better off going to Park Camera's????

Cheers Sean

Hi Sean

All fine thanks, busy as usual.

I'm in HK at the moment and returning tomorrow. I hope all is well with you - in Australia still I assume? Email me directly any time.

RE the lenses. The retail prices from a proper dealer here are about 20% ish better, but as you say with the VAT reclaim it is not a massive saving. Especially when this is a quieter time of year for me and therefore no real need to spend out on lenses that won't get a great deal of use until the spring. Although if some of the contacts that I've made out here come to anything then I might need them sooner....

Cheers Jonathan
