To those who have them, what do you use them for? I mean, not taking pictures!

Sport, portrait, motorsports etc?

Considering one as the next step.

I‘ve had my 30d for around 4 months now and it was my first proper step into DSLR territory. I was after a good all round camera but mainly wanted it for sport/motorsport and wildlife photography as that is where my main interests are initially.

I chose the Canon as the lens selection is vast, great high ISO performance, good FPS/Buffer memory and a reasonable high amount of pixels. Since I have got use to it, I find that the 9 point auto focus system in servo mode works well and better than I expected; ok it’s not quite 1d territory but it is only a fraction of the cost! I also find that when going out in the field the magnesium midsize body makes it really joyful to carry as it’s meaty and durable enough to use, yet not overtly tiresome from being too heavy. My only gripe really has been the White Balance accuracy, it’s naff basically, but shooting RAW helps to get around this issue. Overall it is a lot of camera for the money and in my opinion nothing gets close on the performance to pound ratio.

Here are a few snaps that I’ve taken using the 30d:

I got my 30D just before the summer.
I'm very happy with it, accurate af, good high iso performannce, nice construction (a big jump from the 350D / 400D range).
If i was buying now (and im kind of on the lookout for another camera body) i'd certainly buy another. Sure i'd like a new 40D, but the improvements (especially the modest increase in megapixels) don't justify the increased cost for me.
(I'd totally love a 5D though biggrin)

I've shot festivals, landscapes, and a bit of motorsport. It hasn't let me down once smile

I posted some motorsports pics a few weeks back, all shots from a 30D with the canon 70-300 :

The only time i've seen auto wb issues was when shooting indoors with artificial lighting. I read an article ages ago saying that many of this generation of dslr's can set a poor wb in those conditions (unsure if thats true or not). As has been mentioned, shooting raw stops this being an issue. I don't worry about it smile

Hope this helps.
