I know its not excactly hot at the mo but can air con be fitted to the cerb? If it can be done at the factory then surely it can be done aftermarket?? If so does anyone know how much this would roughly cost or know of anywhere that could do it? Im looking to emigrate to Oz in 6 months and would love to take the car.

I asked the same question about 18 months ago and the general opinion was "yes ..... but no".

Not worth the effort involved (and I'm a refrigeration engineer by profession so it'd have been relatively straight-forward for me).

The Cerb air-con, when working properly, is average at best.

The bottom button on the RHS of the radio will probably be of more use to you. smile

I agree. Not worth the cost and effort. I like the windows down anyway, so the aircons not working how it should, as they should be closed.

Found the aircon on ours ice cold in the summer. Though found the compressor would switch off every couple of hours as if it needed a rest!
From my experience as an marine engineer working in the tropics, the vessels with the best AC were those that had spent time in Australia and had had work done on them there. Find the kit thats been removed from a Cerb, chuck it in the boot and see what can be done in Oz where fridge engineers are more common. Cerbs are great with the window down blasting down country roads in this country, a two or three hour trip in Aussie during a 35 or 40 degree summers day will put you off for good.

Biggest issue IIRC is that the non air con cars didn't have the crank extended on the AJP engine so there was nothing to attach a pulley to drive the compressor. Makes retrofitting air con pretty difficult as a result.

To be honest i'm really happy with mine, after having it re-gassed and lubed it works more than good enough in the summer - keeps the car nice n cool. Then again I took the cats out before the summer so not sure whether that is helping as well. It may be worth checking the reo-stat or whatever its called to make sure its set at the right temp.

Off topic, but also check with the transport people over there to see if a Cerb can be registered in Oz? It can be very difficult to import cars of certain types.

Cheers.

This is certainly the case in NZ, as others have found.

Ive had a look on nine msn and there is a cerb for sale so you must be able to import them - its the emission test id be worried about. The car for sale is a 97 4.2 - its up for $62,000 - thats 3 times as much when you've considered the exchange rate!.

It may have been imported prior to the regulations changing. Its pretty similar to the NZ situation (as mentioned) and the regs changed a few years back. Take for example the Escort Cosworth, there are examples over in NZ and Oz but when the frontal impact new crash test regulations came into place they were banned from further import. What you have already is all there ever will be. Its even worse if you have modifications! Also things like braided brake lines need to be completely replaced if they dont have the little id tags showing they are of a certain specification.

I took two cars to NZ and ended up bringing them both back still registered as Uk cars.

Just best to check up first is all I say.
