BMW Z4 Coupe - any views?

During a chat with my missus today, at which I mentioned a particular Italian which car I've got my sights on, she said she'd like to trade in her Mini Cooper S and have a BMW Z4 Coupe. This came as a complete surprise to me as she's never mentioned the Z4 as an "I quite like" car before.

So, what's the PH view on this particular car - good, bad or indifferent?

The 3 litre engine is a gem(9/10), the handling's good (7/10), really good build quality (9/10), shockingly knotchy gearbox (4/10), crap runflat tyres (0.5/10).... But i love the car and its looks

I almost agree whole-heartedly. I'd give the gearbox a 7 and (having been rescued by the RFTs from what would otherwise have been a wheel change on a busy dual carriageway in heavy rain) I'd give the tyres a 3...

Take one out for a test drive and see what you think.

Mine is SE spec (rather than Sport) which softens the suspension just a tad. You can still spec the sport seats, though, and I should have thought that these are a must.

My g/f traded in her 320d Coupe for one. Loves hers to bits.

We thought the alloys looked a bit naff on the non M models, so we changed them for these....

I personally dont like the M alloys, but those M6 ones look good

I'm really enjoying mine, the combination of the performance (not to mention relative economy too!), looks and rarity make it a pleasure to own.

Funnily enough, my Mrs did exactly the same. Loved our old Cooper S, love the Coupe even more!

Well into 20k miles already having been all round Europe in addition to the daily grind, all that's gone wrong is a bit of interior trim (B pillar) fell off during a trackday. Otherwise feels very well constructed.
I actually really like the gearchange - it is chunky but totally in character with the car. Maybe its a marmite thing.
Handling is great fun - not as sophisticated as a Boxster/Cayman but a bit more boisterous (read sideways) and a right laugh on track. Our runflats have gone in favour of PZero's all round and handling is improved markdely as a result.
Economy/performance is fantastic, a geniune sub 6sec/155mph coupe that returns nearly 30mpg? Sounds good to me. Gem of an engine.
Little small inside, plenty of room for legs but its quite cosy. Ergonomics excellent.

Yep Was pulled last week i wouldnt bother if i was you, the BiB are hot on these plates now, i manage a couple weeks before i got done

I sat in one at the showroom and it didn't have enough leg or headroom for me (6ft 1&quot with the seat fully down and back. Quite claustrophobic I thought, especially with dark headlining.

All I can do is echo what has been written above - head down to the dealer and take one out. I did and now there is a shiny Z4MC in the garage and I love it. I also agree that they are a bit of a marmite car because they are not without thier foibles. If you are looking for a perfect car then head for something else - if, however, you want something a little different with bags of character and turns the daily grind into something you look forward to, then these are most definitely the cars for you.

Yes, it all depends on your size, shape and driving position. I could drive it, but I just couldn't imagine spending much time in there. It just felt cramped in every direction.

No probs for me either @ 6"1... good job too after spending 10hrs at the wheel day after we bought it! You must be a strange shape

No shit? I guess the low seating position with limited headroom, large centre tunnel and relatively low roofline didn't really work for me. It just felt small and claustrophobic inside. The 1 and 3 series interiors both seemed huge in comparison.
