Hi,

Can anyone who works as a graphics designer tell me how much I should expect to pay for icons and a splash screen for an application. I need around 20 icons, in sizes 16x16 and 32x32 for use within in the application, and a splash screen about 450x300 pixels which displays a company logo and a nice design for a 3-5 seconds while the application loads.

I have a quote from one designer, but having no experience in the field at all, don't know if it is fair or expensive. I have been told by someone else it is expensive - but like me he is not a graphics artist so doesn't know what is involved.

Difficult to appreciate the work involved without understanding more about the job. The visual style of the work will have a big bearing on the time and skill required. With 20 icons it sounds like there are likely to be a few that are outside of the 'traditional' icon set, so I'd guess some time is required to define how to represent a few subjects. There are lots more variables.

If I were to tackle the job I would estimate a ballpark of £900-1,200. That's top-of-my-head based on a middle ground for all of the variables that immediately come to mind.

Thats roughly what he has came back with, it's an application we are developing so some of the graphics need to represent some obscure things, so a bit of creativity is needed to find an image that is suitable.

Thanks smile

In which case 16x16 will be an interesting challenge. I guarantee you could find considerably cheaper quotes but the old adage of you get what you pay for rings true, as ever. If you and your designer communicate well and you rate his previous work then I'd say you've done alright.

Well the aim of the application is for it to be as easy to use as possible, and i think the graphics guy understands this and was keen to use icons which would best allow people to quickly learn the product.

I agree you get what you pay for, and I think low quality icons and images can really cheapen a product.

I know a chap who I think would be very good, and is also very reasonably priced. Mail me if you want his details.
