Is this alternator correct for a Pre Cat?
Discussion
I reckon mine's on the way out because its whining just like when you've got a cat by the tail and shortly before the meeeeeeoooooooowwww as you launch it over the hedge
I'll take it off tomorrow (oh god, that's today actually, just look at the time) and whiz into Midland Magneto to see if I can get bearings for it, but if not, it might be worth just replacing it and so back to my question of soooooo long ago...

I took the alternator off today and dropped in at a specialist to see what the prognosis was. Turns out the whining WAS the alternator and it was pretty much shagged.
I'll get a new 70amp unit tomorrow and let you know if my £50 or so plus thievery was money well spent.
Guddo! Would be interested to know, although mine is a 500 preserp(-would this make any difference?) almost ordered one up myself as mine sounds not too good......been on since `98!I'll get a new 70amp unit tomorrow and let you know if my £50 or so plus thievery was money well spent.

Its the terms on the back (its quite easy to change to an alternator plug BTW), and the handedness of the mounts (can be spun round in the case in a push) that seem to be the variants with these alts, apart from the power ratings.

To be honest this is what put me off the 100a version he offered me. Well that and the fact the one he had on the shelf to show me had an internal fan with a serp pulley on the front. The mounting points looked the same but it also had no rear casing so I couldn't tell what the terminals were going to be.Dave
I could just see problems written all over it and for my pre
Of course it could just have come down the the fact the 70a was £50 and the 100a was £120

Ian, not sure if its the guy you are getting an alt from, but there is a chap on e-bay that sells service kits for the alts, reg/brushes/bearings... (everything except diode pack IIRC - you can get that separate if you want). The whole lot was less than £20 I think - and rebuilding the alt on a bench is quite easy
