XJ40 electrical gremlins
Discussion
Morning
If any of you are watching the bargain barge thread in general gassing, you may have noticed that i've picked up a 1994 3.2 xj40 last night.
Mechanically she seems in fine health, but she has a few electrical gremlins that I need to chase down. Are there any good Jag websites I can look at to help me out?
The problems I have are the main headlights don't work, the passenger side windows don't work and the radio has no power going to it.
I know a fuse has blown as the vcm is flashing "FUSE 2" at me. I didn't get a chance to look at it last night, but where can I find fuse 2, i assume it's in one of the boxes at the front of the engine bay behind the headlights?
I also noticed in my cursory look this morning that i'm missing a relay from the bank of 6 at the passenger side rear of the engine bay, it's the 4th one in from the passenger side. Any ideas what this controls and whether it could have been removed for a reason?
I also need to replace the brake pads, which i'm hoping is a straightforward job?

Cheers, I'll have a look.
ive had a few xj40's and have learnt that the haynes manual and a multimeter is a must.
the later ones are far better, but the haynes is a bit vauge about the 90ish on electrics.
ive got a mid 90s one now thats got a couple of issues, ive found the best way is to buy spare modules and ecus off ebay any swop them about.
the speedo doesnt work on mine, im currenty waiting for the ebs ecu to see if thats the problem.....
i think (note, think) that fuse two is part of the block thats in the centre consol behind the plastic cover?????? - im 80 miles from the car, so cant check at the mo.

' Fuse 2 ' is down in the N/s footwell. It is telling you there is a fuse blown in ' fusebox number 2 '. Have a look at the label on the fuse box and see if the items you have listed are fused in that fuse box. If not, have a look at the fuses and see if any are blown.
As for the relay, different models used the same harness, so for example, the relay missing could be for a V12, so have a look a manual, and see what it does.

I'm back with the car on monday, so I'll have a scout around and see what I can find.
Regarding the headlights check the obvious things first, but I would put money on it being a faulty control module. I went through two or three of these when I had mine and they weren't cheap to get replaced although I did use a specialist for everything rather than do it myself.
I'd recommend http://www.berkshire-jag-components.co.uk for spare parts.
Good luck!

Thanks for that, the dim/dip module (which i assume is the module you mention?) is only about £60 on there, so not too expensive I'd recommend http://www.berkshire-jag-components.co.uk for spare parts.
Good luck!

However, first things first, a full check of every fuse in the car is on the cards next week.
