Anybody got any improvements for the standard carb manifold setup on an essex v6 in a taimar (other than stick triple webbers on!)

There are a number of options, but unless you have a modified engine, on most of these options you will wasting your time as all you will do is use (waste) more fuel.

If your engine has been mildly tuned (eg around 150-160bhp) I would recommend getting your 38DGAS recoditioned and taken out to a 40DGAS. This used to be done by Robin Rew, a Scimitar specialist, but I don't know who does it these days.

More BHP and I would recommend a Weber 40DFI, (I had one of these), however this is a performance carb and has no fuel saving measures and will drink a lot more fuel, but with the right air filter (and exhaust) could be good up to about 210bhp. That figure is not the improvement!! it does depend on the rest of your engine.

Other options include a Holley (Terminator on PH has one of these), also there is a four injectors in barrel Holley version available as well if you want to try fuel injection (Real Steel)

The triple Webers (apart from looking the business) really only come into their own on a very trick engine that is going to be used at high revs. Engines in the 220bhp and above category. Also it is mandatory to fit trick manifolds to get the best from the Triple Webers otherwise you will see very little improvement.

Take care to examine your air filter as well. Standard K&N type filters that fit under the bonnet usually will only allow breathing up to about 160bhp. Alternatives such as Pipercross or ITG, breathe too much from the top and are often squashed against the bonnet thus restricting airflow. I had a custom filter from K&N (I made the plates, K&N designed and made the filer with extra deep vanes) that was designed to breathe to 235bhp and fit under the bonnet.

If you really want to make the car go quicker I would suggest leaving the engine well alone and getting a set of Ledas and Springs from Adrain Venn. Get him to set the car up and cornerweight it, you will then be able to carry so much more speed through the corners.

40DFI was fitted to some Fiats and Ferraris. It is sold direct by Weber still as a DGAS replacement but at some horrible price. You also have to sort out different linkage and throttle return spring.

My engine was 10.1:1 Powermax Pistons, fully balanced bottom end, Vulcan Maxiflow Heads, Kent V63, ported inlet manifold with 40DFI + trick K&N air filter. It was built by a man who took his time and built Essex Engines for rally cars in the 70s. On a set of rollers it produced 140bhp at the rear wheels at about 4500rpm, so probably good for a few more at 5500rpm.

The biggest power gain came when I changed the exhaust to a Tony Law system, bunch of bananas tuned manifolds and big bore pipes throughout (£900!!!) After that it would out accelerate my Impreza Turbo between 30mph and 90mph. Now given that the Impreza was about 235bhp but weighed more than the TVR, I reckon the TVR was pushing out somewhere between 190 and 205bhp at the engine.

I still reckon the best performance mod is the Ledas though.

I had some work done on my engine by John Wade of JW Developments he seems to know his stuff and advertises in sprint, it would be worth your while to give him a call.

There is some interesting advice on V6 tuning, including the fuel system here: www.geocities.com/zephyr_mark4/essex.html
