Hi all,

Just replaced my alternator with what I have been told is the correct one, well it fits and is 70amp rated so I guess all is ok. Anyways, it is slightly different to the one taken out in as much as the set of spade connectors where the warning light is connected to is not there and has been replaced by a terminal. Ok I thinks and fit it anyway. Fire the car up and the volt meter is reeding low, about 11 amps and red ign light stays on. Any ideas why ?

Also, the original fault with the old alternator was over charging when the car got hot, ie volt meter banging up and down on the +15v side of things and ign light flickering. I have assumed that it was the voltage regulator that was starting to brake down when affected by high under bonnet temps. Would you say that was correct ? and out of curiosity there is a little black box which is connected on the alternator case/Batt -ve with a lead out which plugs into next the B+ connection, any idea what this is and could this be at fault smile

i'm a little rusty on alternators but i think you'll find that the small wire that everyone assumes is just to the ign light is actually the field energise feed, so if this isn't corretly connected you won't get anything out of the alternator.

Unlike dynamos, alternators require current to produce current.

your original fault is the same as mine was a while ago, replaced the voltage regulator and problem solved.

Lucas part number for voltage regulator 138789, £41.24 including vat.

I recently had a new alternator on mine.

Since then the ignition light faintly glows. You can only see this in the dark. The light was fixed at the same time, it wasn't working at all before, so I don't know if this is a product of the new alternator or not.

Sometimes the volt meter is reading high, like 15V when running, but most of the time its 13.5V

Is the voltage regulator part of the alternator and therefore new, or is this seperate and perhaps in need of renewal?

The regulator is part of the alternator I believe. Going to take the new alternator back and get my money back and recon the old one I think.

New alternators don't always work. I replaced one, red light and voltmeter didn't respond, changed it again and bingo - all fine.

Had the alternator reconned, new regulator fitted, cost £29+VAT appears to be charging just fine now but not had a chance to get her hot yet to properly test it.
