does anyone know exactly what is involved in the first service?, the reason i ask is because ive just got a new bike(pics to follow) and its close to needing one but i cant get it booked in for a while so am going to do it myself.

Oil and filter usually, combined with checking all the nuts and bolts are present and torqued correctly

Depends what bike it is. As said above, oil & filter as a minimum, but I'm pretty sure that my old Tuono had to have the valve clearances checked at 600 miles.
Also, if it's a new bike, I imagine the warranty will be void if you do it yourself.

Usually, the labour involved in the first service is included (to the original purchaser, anyhow) anf the owner simply pays fo he oil. (So I've found with Yamahas)

Just ensure ensure that this does not invalidate your warrenty, most bikes 1st service is an inspection service + oil and filter.

Read your warrenty T&C's, mine states that I may be out of warrenty if I do not use a Kawasaki repair centre, I know they cannot uphold this with new Euro ruling, but you must use genuine parts and be able to prove the service was done. The 1st service however may have different impications due to safety issues.

"If any problems arise from him doing anything wrong in the service his warranty will not cover him.
Main thing is use the correct oil & filter and use the specific torque values. i.e. don't strip the sump plug or filter and top up any other fluids, adjust and lube chain and check ALL nuts and bolts, blow up tyres."

HTH

Personally I'd add that you're not going to get the dealer stamp either which may have further reaching implications?
