Just went to the garage to go for a spin.... but no such luck. Starter was permanently making a metal on metal crunch noise as it span, but without turning the engine over.

Why me ? ( it was replaced just under a year ago)

Do you reckon its the starter clutch not engaging properly?

Ive now had three in 10 months.Just picked mine up today and had a good blast back. When you get it done, you really want to fit a heat shield,as its the heat from the manifolds that kills them.I think CT do one for about £35

had the same problem with mine, wasn't engaging properly think its a common fault. i now have a race metal starter fitted which seems to cope with turning the engine over but was still not engaging every time. so after a good chat with Simon at levens and whilst it was in bits having a new ct clutch fitted we had a look and where it hadn't been engaging it had worn the teeth on the flywheel ring gear. so in went a new one and so far so good. we kind of came to the conclusion that it may be a tolerance issue where the starter isn't engaging fully on the flywheel before it tries to start the engine or it could of just been a worn ring gear on the flywheel hmm? time will tell.

when i had my clutch changed by trackcar he left the heat sheild off starter
so heat can disperse and not cook starter.

Definitely worth learning how to replace your starter, as it seems the most common prob I read. Mine eventually went down the clunking crunching root until eventually the click symptom. So I got a new one from Racing green and with the great help of various PH posts removed and refitted the new one to find 'click'. Called Martin at Racing Green who has been so helpful with advice and he said even new ones can be faulty. Anyway fitted another new one and brmmm, she is starting like a dream. Heat shield might be be worth experimenting with but not the wrap it up type as I think it need some airflow to keep it cool. I'm going to try a clip on type, probably a DIY one. Let you know how long the starter lasts! Anyone know where I can get my old one reconditioned local to Hampshire?

Just had mine done at Superstart in Emsworth.

Top job in terms of service. Can't comment on the successfulness of the refurb itself yet as re-fitting the b*gger is tomorrow's job!

Wrap the exhausts not the starter and make sure your spoiler is still attached as this helps keep engine bay temps down.

I wish I could do the job myself, but being that I cannot see or feel the starter easily, I feel unsure to have a go.

here's a pic from my last flatbed trip
