Chimp Thermostat
Discussion
does anybody know if its possible to fit a different thermostat. I'm trying to keep the temperature down over the last few weeks the gauge has shown temperatures of 110 I know the gauges are not reliable and I have used water wetter (USA version) to help. its been suggested that if a thermostat that opens earlier say 75/80 were used it would help keep the temperature down (well its worth a try)
has anyone managed to keep the temperature down other than remove the cat.

it's quite possible the wrong stat is in there in the first place. If someone has used one for arover engine it will run hot, get a new TVR part and then see what temperature you have. If it's still high, either the guage is wrong or there's some other problem with the cooling system.
Get the standard system working properly before additional bits and bobs are considered. As was said the Range Rover stat opens too late(hot) and can cause problems, there are TVR Rover V8 specific stats.
If your driving in slow traffic a lot then additional continguency is no bad thing. Options are the leven low temp kit (works for me), the modwise two speed kit, or at the very least an override switch that allows you to leave the fans permanently on when desired. 500s obviously more prone to overheating than 400s and 450s.

If the guage is accurate and that needs to be checked and you are reaching 110 degrees.... THERE IS A SERIOUS FAULT WITH THE CAR"S COOLING SYSTEM! At those sustained temperatures there is a great risk of engine damage. To quote TVR stop the engine and find out what is wrong.
Could be dead fans, water leaks, dead otter switch, stuck thermostat or duff head gasket or other more expensive things. Adding water wetter etc is basically trying to cure the symptoms and not the cause.
First thing is to check is that gauge and then work through the cooling system. Search the archives or look at the cooling chapter in the bible for details.
