Lands End to John O'Groats

Hello there,
I'm after some ideas for a trip I'm planning. Basically I'm trying to sort out a Club do going Lands End to John O'Groats.
Does anyone have an idea on a route, not involving too much motorway miles? Any recommended roads, etc?
I re-acquainted myself with the A686 over the weekend, so thats one bit sorted.
