I got this from a supplier:

Please see our latest trade price list attached, together with details below of our new office address and telephone numbers which will be effective from 1st November. We have been using our existing 0870 number for 6 years, but felt that in light of forthcoming changes to call charges on these numbers; now would be the best time to make this change back to a standard rate telephone line.

Our new number will utilize the latest VOIP technology (no more Greensleeves!!) and most importantly it will now cost less to call us.

New Telephone Number: - Reading (0118) xxx xxxx

Interesting. I think the payscales have changed and there will no longer be the earning potential that these numbers once offered.

They do have their place though, I've only used one once but that was where we were trying to discourage calls rather then actively make money from them. I felt market forces worked against companies who used them to actually milk their customers of more money.

The interesting admission is that a real 'national rate' number (0118) is cheaper to call than the 'pretend national rate' number (0870). That was the irksome part - 0870s were always sold as 'national rate'...

VOIP technology does not preclude 'Greensleeves' wink . The choice is yours (or, the company using VOIP, anyway) - usually it is copyright-free syntheszed 'porno'-style music, but anything can be used.

0870 numbers are IMHO rip off numbers. They cost 20p a minute, rather than free landline alternatives... www.saynoto0870.com is a great site smile
