Just bought a 2006 330d. Stunning engine with spectacular torque and plenty of power but just wondering.......

My last car was a 2003 Land Rover Disco with a 2.5 litre diesel and so much turbo lag you needed a diary to plan your overtaking manouvers! However I did eventually go for a 3rd party remap of the ECU and the pick up in power, reduction in turbo lag and general improvement in useability really surprised me. Admittedly the £500 bill for a bit of software was a bit of a shocker but on a cost per horsepower basis it was the best bit of tuning expenditure I have made. Kind of begs the question why Land rover didn't make more of the engine in production mode....

Consequently I am curious whether others have any experience of chipping the 330D. I am determined that I would only consider this if the vendor was reputable and proven and that it was also invisible to the service computers. I have no wish to risk the health of my engine although I appreciate there is no free lunch here, a more stressed engine will have a shorter life. however I think BMW build quality is such that some tuning can occur without undue risk (e.g. Hartge remaps carry implicit BMW support).

So the question is does anyone have experience of chipping the 330d?

mine was done when i got it, brilliant engine, miss the torque the car had, so much so that the chipped audi i have at the minute is going to make way for another 330d. the tunning company who did the audi are very good though and will come to you. http://www.sp-tuning.moonfruit.co.uk/

Out of interest the "Keeping it hidden" is clearly a ploy to avoid warrenty voiding by BMW (am I correct?) also in addition to the £500 for the upgrade your ins premiums will increase - how much did your disco go up when you declared the upgrade??

....and this is of interest to you because you have a Discovery that you are thinking of getting chipped and you have an identical insurance profile to me? Or maybe you have another point you want to make that hasn't been made before?

Nope % increase is all thats important - my point is its not JUST £500 its that + the increased ins premiums year on year & the fact didnt some chipper say recently that 99% of their customers do not inform their ins

Van Akken do a smart chip. You can fit it yourself if you want, therefore you can remove it to make it invisible for servicing and warranty. I have one in a 184bhp 330D. Easy to install and remove. Torque gain impressive, the power just a bonus higher up the rev range. Nice people too.

What % rise did you suffer from your ins company when you told them you had fitted a quick to remove engine mapping chip???

An admin charge for changing the details. It's a bit like fitting fancy alloys, if you tell them they put on a few £££, if you dont and make a claim for an accident, the whole claim can be void, because of non declaration.

Are you called 'beef' for a reason?

Its my old xbox live gamer tag - & before that was my nickname in Rugby "pass it to dai beef" etc, I used to be a very good impact player (making the hard yards) and would always punch a good hole in the defensive line, 19 stone & about 14-16 seconds for the 100m in my prime.

Thats a very long time ago - no doubt today a winger would bump me. Anyway this is off topic so no more rugby talk here. Gwladrugby.com is the place for that!

No I asked what was the increase OP suffered when he chipped his Disco, he didnt take the question too well and has refused to answer it even at a % increase level.

I hope Op isnt one of the 99% of owners who dont inform their ins company of the modification - else uninsured.

Back on topic...

Get a remap from DMS Automotive, like I did. They guaranteed it would be invisible to BMW's computers, and that if BMW wiped it they'd reinstall it free of charge.

Really can't recommend it enough. Speak to Mike Cooper at DMS and he'll sort you out.

Many thanks, this is very helpful and thanks to the others that provided the information that I asked for.

Welsh, I hope you have advised your life insurance company about your weight, it might affect your premiums!

No he is't.

And the remap isn't invisible if BMW (or indeed the insurers) decide to look.

That was a long time ago - pushing well under 14st now wink.

But seriously not informing ins comps of chipping is insane your effectively driving uninsured even though your paying £x in premiums. If you can afford the modification you need to pay the extra insurance.

Isnt there a fine & points for such a thing? Also I wonder if you get your cars serviced main dealer they note all modified cars and pass that info onto the DVLA?

The final point is if your ar is chipped then its CO2/km will be different and you may be due to pay more VED (or less) - so how do you go about sorting that out?
