What contacts have you? Automotive / Motorsport
Discussion
Im due to complete my 4 year sandwich degree in Motorsport Engineering in June 2008.
Im expecting a 2i - 1st class honours degree.
My dissertation is based on the design of a new major component for a popular sportscar.
I have extensive work experience in the motorsport industry for a 22 year old student.
I am currently applying for jobs online, through contacts and speculative emails.
If you have any contacts at Automotive or Motorsport
Suppliers, Design companies, Production, Data logging, pretty much any level of the industry I would really appreciate these.
I have already exhausted all of my contacts I currently have, and i firmly beleive that i should apply to as many as possible.
I understand the privacy of contacts and promise not to share these with anybody or any other sources.
I look forward to hearing from anyone via email please
Kind Regards

I've been out of the industry for 15 years but you can find all the names of the companies and their technical directors by reading Autosport and doing some internet research. Write letters to them directly, keep it very short and try to grab their attention, with a copy of your CV attached as page 2.
Flatter them a little ("I have always been impressed by XYZ products" or "I think you are the market leader in whatever" and ask them if you could meet them for a chat, or if they might have any work for you, or if they can suggest who you should contact. Enclose a stamped address envelope, your email address and your phone number.
If you send 50 of these, it'll cost you £50 and maybe 10 hours of your time, then I'd expect you to get 10 calls, letters or emails. If you're any good, that should equate to 1 or 2 job offers.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, I took that route on trying to secure a good placement for my year in industry.
So far i have exhausted the online graduate schemes, speculative emails with CV and covering letter to the companies of which i would like to be a part of within the motorsport / automotive sector and that about 50 companies.
Ive found that having a contacts name at least gives you a reference point and someone you can at times perhaps relate with the application process.

No problem, but there's a big difference between an email and a nice envelope with a handwritten name on the front of it (makes it say 'personal' without being so pushy as to actually write 'personal' on there). Once it's been opened, you have 20 seconds to grab the person's attention, so try to make it interesting... and remember you're trying to get them to meet you or talk on the phone for a chat, some advice on how to get into motorsport etc.So far i have exhausted the online graduate schemes, speculative emails with CV and covering letter to the companies of which i would like to be a part of within the motorsport / automotive sector and that about 50 companies.
