Really like the fourth one ;o)

Nice shots, and nice car! Never done a rig shoot myself, but I have a feeling you may have been making things hard for yourself by moving the car too quickly?

  1. 4 blown up would be a great chrimbo present for the owner. Or me for that matter. Nice crop.

thanks for the comments duncan :-)

the car was actually being pushed allong at less than walking pace with engine off on new tarmac ;-)

still having trouble with vibrations. it's very difficult to keep the rig out of shot AND give the camera good support when attached to the body.

thinking i might go for an undercar type arrangement next time?

If there's not very much of the rig in shot, could you not photoshop it out. I know a of a few pictures on here that require the photoshop treatment after a rig shoot.

can't be bothered to be honest.

as far as i know this is how the photoshops done:

-photograph moving shot.

-hold camera still and remove the rig (sounds easy-IS NOT) so the two shots match up.

-layer the two images and erase the parts with the rig in.

the problem is that when photographing cars you're really photographing reflections. in the moving shot they are blured (which i think makes the shot) in the still shot they are not.

it's all a bit of a bodge job to my mind and i'd rather have the rig not boscuring the car by using a rig that runs underneath the body so when you're photoshopping it's only the road you're cloning over the rig. (sorry if i'm not making much sense).

Lovely car - I really like #1.

I think the rig shots suffer because of the limited composition options you have by having to exclude the rig, where if you were PeeShopping it out you wouldn't get this problem. I do take your point about removing a rig in post being hassle - I've never done it myself but I'd give it a go just to open up more avenues when composing.

Great car and great shots! I must admit on the first one and fifth it does make the car look a bit, what's the word, model like. As though it's a corgi model you're taking a shot of? I can't think why though.

Have you had an opportunity to read Matt's guide to rig shots?

Love the crop in number 4, too biggrin

yeah...i'm a big fan of matts work and he's got some great shots with his rig (same as the one i had) the guide was good too but i can't help thinking that sticking the rig to the car is not the way forward for me due to all the photoshop trickery involved and the limitations in getting the camera far enough away from the vehicle.

i think the crop is maybve a little too tight BUT i love the shot as it looks more 'natural' for want of a better word. it's shot with a 50mm lens so it's not super wide and all distorted like most rig shots you see. i'd like to make a rig which allows me to get the camera further away form the car so i can use moderate wide angle and normal lenses.

point taken....prob due to the use of a 135mm lens.

Longer the focal length, the shallower your depth of field. So your both right wink

absolutely, although a longer lens will also make it look smaller from a perspective point of view. for the gt40 this works well, as it makes the overhangs of the car look longer and shows the low-slung proportions at their best! nice pics.
