Air filter cleaning

Anyone done it? and any recommendations? Mine is looking a bit gungy on the front facing edge. Not noticed any performance problems though.......

Official service schedule envisages change of filter, but I will happily wash the foam one on my Chim in parafin or a water/detergent mix and re-oil... it's stood this three times so far and has not visibly deteriorated. There are specialist sticky filter oils for dressing foam filters (I used a motocross one by Rock Oil) but two-stroke oil or even gear oil seems to work just as well... trick is not to over-coat.

Sure you're not mistaking the oil for 'gunge'? You may fnd it's supposed to be like that....
