Jobo Giga One Ultra 80GB
Discussion
In preparation for Xmas and my Easter trip to India I'm looking at digital storage devices. I don't need to have the facility to view/edit but I do need to get shots off my memory cards without lugging a laptop abroad!!. Now, I have two 2 gig Sandisk Ultra Extreme 3 SD cards so I suppose the questions are twofold.
1 Does anyone have any views on the above unit/ advice on others?
2 Bulk storage or just buy some extra cards?
Thanks in advance
Peter

Contradictory response here
I have the 40Gb Jobo, and I think it's great.
However, it's at home - and I am travelling around the US (83 day trip) with a lapdog after all!!
If I wasn't carrying this around (Lightroom and P'shop, as well as interwebnet access and trip planning on Word/Excel and keeping in contact with work-related stuff), I'd have a Jobo in the bag with me. Definitely.
You won't get the advantage of interweb across parts of your trip, unlike 80% plus of the hotels and motels we're in...... So go for the Jobo, and have a few extra cards for ease of organisation too.

ah, .... well, .... err, not quite.
perhaps i should have added an "also" at the end of my latter sentence.
the gigaone is superb and always travels with me.
but what i meant to put across was, that i think you should also take more cards on your trip ... if you lose one, and one fails, you're boluxd !
if you eventually buy one, ensure it's properly formatted before you start, and test it well before you travel.
i don't know if beano will agree with me here, but i tend to lose a slight smidgeon of confidence in the gigaone once i approach 90-95% of it's storage capacity (i suspect it's the same with most units ?).... likewise with any CF or SD card, i only fill to around 90%
i don't know what filesize you shoot, but my "gut feeling"
for your storage ratio requirements tends not to add up, so to speak.
i shoot 17mp files (mostly continuous) onto 4gig cards (aprox 10) .... along with the 40 gig of storage (as above) and 120 g within the laptop, i feel comfortable for any event.
dsorry if i'm talkin' cr@p ... i'll edit in the morning when sober.

I won't have the laptop with me which is why I am considering the larger capacity Gigaone and the reason I use 2gig cards is that the 4 gig ones were less reliable when I bought them. Now they are better but I do wonder about having so much on one card. Most of my pics for this trip will be fine JPEG's at 4.8meg file size but for some of the more important shots I'll add RAW to that which increases that to 17.2meg. As I anticipate taking a lot of images, some one else on here did a 3 week trip to India and shot 30GB, and I like you and Beano am loath to overfill memory devices I hope the larger unit will give me adequate space.
I do like the idea of more memory cards though. I'll have to increase my stock by a few to avoid any problems.
Thanks to you both again for your kind advice, for which I'm very greatful.
