Anyone else considering a Passat R36?
Discussion
Perhaps the most delayed car ever, and doubly frustrating for me as the April 08 launch means the Alpina is getting closer to the dreaded 100K miles, whereupon it's value will drop like an anvil down a well.
Still, I've made the decision, and coughed up real cash money for a pre-order.
Anyone else done this, or considering one?
Looks like it's going to be a bit of belter, and very cheap in comparison to the other 300bhp German saloons
Based my decision on driving a Passat 170tdi SEL DSG, a Golf GTi, and a Golf R32 - the premise being that the SEL was a very good 'car', and the improvements of the R32 over the GTi, left me thinking that VW would have to royally balls it up for it not to be any good.
Someone justify my decision! Please!

I had an R32 and it was the best all rounder car I have ever owned. It was very solidly built - better than my audi. The exhaust note was great. It was fun to chuck about too. A car you can really tick a lot of boxes with.
The R36 should be like a grown up version. Of course expect more comfort, less noise intrusion, but at the slight expense of a touch less handling prowess, due to it's size.
I now have the W8 4.0 4x4, previous model passat as it was a real bargain by comparison. The new model won't be as smooth and refined, but should handle better and consume a little less fuel. Depends which balance you prefer in a car really.
ps
My hifi installer mentioned the new model passat uses interior plastics of half the thickness of the previous generation. The affected areas are usually hidden from view, making up the structure of the lower and internal dash, doors etc. I would expect this to lead to more unwanted rattles before too long, eminating from deep within locations. Shame really, as VW used to get better built with each new generation. The bean counters are getting involved.
Also the new VW off roader Toerag replacement thing has lost 300kg. Build quality can only suffer as a result.
I intend to get a 6.0 Phaeton next, as it's the best built German car ever made.
