I need 4 new tyres for my car to pass its MOT. I currently have 4 205/40/17 Toyo Proxy T1S's. An average tyre IMO, not excelling in the wet or dry. I would like a tyre that offers better grip in all conditions.

I am considering the Goodyear Eagle F1's or the Yokohama Prada Spec 2's. Can anybody offer any informed opinions on the above tyres- grip, wear rate...

Or if I am neglecting any other good tyres please let me know!

Thanks

I'm surprised you didn't like the Toyo's - I have always found them to be good.

SXOC guys like Proxys or F1's - horses for courses.

Falkens 453s are also liked as a more budget tyre but I guess your not after budget.

Goodyear F1 are supose to be a good allrounder.

Yokos are bloody good in the dry and are in a different league compared to the T1-R.

I ahd the T1- R on my scooby and i hated every minute of having them on the car. Sidewalls are to soft. I have gone back to using directional bridgestones and so far in the wet are better that the toyos. I had my toyos on for 8000 miles and they were still another 10000 miles left in them but decided to get rid as they were just not predictable!

please please DON'T get the Goodyear F1 GSD3s - in that size they will probably be made in China, and they are utter shite.

I have them on my Impreza at the moment in 215/45/17. Previous to these I have had 2 sets of F1 GSD3s which were made in Germany, and they were excellent.

For alternates, I'll be buying Uniroyal Rainsports next.

God this is trotted out every time F1's are mentioned - just make sure they have the EU markings and have Made in Germany written on them - job sorted.

I'm begining to wonder if this is actually an urban myth cos its always a friend of a friend's brother in law. I don't know about the law but I would have assumed its illegal to sell non eu marked ones in this country and any 'reputable' dealer would be selling the originals.

If you go to Jim's Tyre Exchange for some cheapo under the counter special deal and you end up with the chineses ones then you deserve to be ripped off. I once a heard a story about Mytyres.com selling the chineses GSD3's but nobody on SXOC had come across them despite lots of people getting them from there.

I'm afraid you are misinformed.

The ones made in China are EU marked.
mytyres will ONLY be able to sell Chinese GSD3s in that size, because Goodyear only make that size in China now.

Yeah the T1Rs are excellent. The T1Ss are not! Two different leagues. The S is just a road tyre, the R is a fast road track tyre.

Go for the T1Rs. You will notice the difference coming from T1S. Good prices are available for them compared to worse tyres. Dont get F1s as they are made in China now and are wank!

There's only one thing for it then....get 3 std scoobs...one with T1R's, One with bridgestones and the other with Goodyears.

Take them out on track and see which one has the best mech grip...that'll sort it...or we'll be here for years otherwise hehe

Its ok on a nice smooth track but try on back country b-roads.. I always have the ABS cutting in when braking, but with Bridgestones i dont. I have always had problems with them. Tried various pressures but nothing worked. Switch back to bridgestones, and guess what i do not have a problem with them. T1-R always understeered and the edges of the tyres were getting worn as it was leaning on the edge to much. Again this does not happen with the bridgestones.

Horses for courses really and each to their own. I think it's all about driving styles and personal preferences plus no two std scoobys are the same either, even if they have just come off the production line together. There's always something just a little bit different about each one. Besides, i honestly think that whichever manufacturer you choose out of the above 3 they are all very good and you won't be far wrong with any of them.

I've had Bridgestones and i didn't feel they were quite as grippy as the Toyo's, although i found my first set (215's) to be a little soft on turn in, but still very grippy nonetheless. My current Toyo's though are T1R 225/17/45 which i found a bit better than the std size 215's, and i have mine pumped up about 36/37F 34R and that works perfectly. Very sharp turn in which is nice but not too sharp and darty.

I find they are excellent in the wet too, and i have gone round some B road bends and motorway curves at some really hairy speeds when it's been absolutely chuicking it down and there's loads of standing water about. Not even a hint of slip or aquaplaining, they are very good, but like i say...
'Whatever floats your boat' hehe

Which Bridgestones were these? I used to run RE070s until they chunked and finally delaminated after 3 laps of Bruntingthorpe. Not what you want to see after 150+ down the main straight. yikes

Ah so its a size thing and not a supplier thing. That would explain why I haven't come across them, as thats an unusal size for a 200. cool thanks for the info.
