530d breather valve

hiya all,
been ages,,
been reading about turbo failure and how to prevent it,
i think proper servicing ,using the right oils
not ragging it when its cold is all important,
mine has done 118,000 and sounds sweet as a nut,
ive heard that the engine breather valve can have a bad
influence if its not changed,
can any one shine any light on when this should be sorted,
does it come under services at given times,
thanks all,

Breather assembly is an easy replace. Parts cost about £35 from a dealer & takes 45 mins to do at home. Buy the one with the blue cylindrical foam insert.

Also remove clean out the EGR valve as it can get clogged up.

I did both these jobs in about 1.5 hours with no special tools or knowledge. BMWland forum has a write up & photos of the procedures for both jobs with a little searching

Incidentally, I also do intermediate oil changes a thousand miles after the second green service light extinguishes. Mobil 1 which is BMW spec for this engine is £23 + vat for 4 litres from Costco

The EGR is the exhaust gas recirculation valve. It is basically in the outlet manifold on the front right hand side of the engine bay when viewed from the front. It sites in situ in the manifold & is easily removed. It has a spring loaded plunger which open on pressure. The plunger, which seals on the wall of the valve body can get clogged up. The whole thing can be removed & cleaned with degreaser such as Gunk, but be thorough scraping all the crud away. An easy job which may also help responsiveness as well as helpng the turbo to operate properly
