Howdo chaps,

A friend of mine has his heart set on building an Ultima GTR, but with the Jeff Schwartz LS7 unit.

Hes obcessed with the Twin Turbo option, but after a long discussion yesterday, we're not so sure that it would be that user friendly with 1200bhp.

The car will be used for fair weather hooning, runs accross to the ring and of course, around the ring and generally that kind of behaviour

Would 1200BHP be a ticket to an early grave???

Would 700bhp suffice???

TIA

IMO complete and utter overkill, with 500bhp you struggle to use any more than 50% of its potential on the road!!! sounds like pub bragging rights to me. A LS7 with 650 or a good SBC with similiar will be plenty!!

I've got a Magnacharged 6.0L LS2 in mine - also from Jeff.

It pulled 580HP with stock cast iron manifolds and stock 2.5" vette cats. This is similar to stock LS7 numbers. Add headers and a mild cam to an LS7.

My car is stupidly fast, but will run in traffic and is well behaved when I want to be.

I cant imagine what Jeff's car is like (and its 1000hp) - Jeff tells me that it is ridiculous - spins the wheels at 100mph...... but dont let ANY of that put you off.

I went for the Magnacharged LS2 because:
1. I have always wanted a supercharged car.
2. The LS7 was only "about to be released" and at the time it looked like aftermarket ECU was going to be required - I wanted it as close to stock as possible for emissions.
3. The LS2 with the Magnacharger is California Smog approved - I am in Hong Kong and need to be emissions compliant.

I had an option at the time to get Jeff to build me an engine - but I went with a crate engine and bolt on magnacharger as I was a bit worried about having something other than stock.

Having spoken to Jeff during the building of the engine, and spending a week with him on Power Tour, and seeing what he's done with his car - if I had my time again I would tell him my budget and let him build to my budget and his spec - you'll get a lot more bang for your buck that way.

If you have 1200 in your head you're never gonna be satisfied with less.

So - my advise would be go with it if:

  • you can get 1200 to be a drivable street car with no overheating or drivability issue.
  • you have the will power to use only 5,6,700 of the 1200 BHP on the road.
I have 497 at the fly and I could do with 550 for road and 650 for track.

PS. I think you need about 300 for doing corner exits.

get a ride in one with an honest 500bhp (lots of bs power figures about) then you will see how stupid 1200 would be!!!

True...... but you could get Jeff to build you a setup that is capable of 1000+ hp with different boost maps for lower power.

The Canam he built was done that way....Jeff gave the owner a couple of different boost maps after the dyno session.

Im in agreement with you chaps that a genuine 1200bhp would be a bit pointless unless you're doing top speed events

Given the lightweight nature of the GTR, I would think that 600bhp to the wheels would be more than sufficiant and more useable than worrying about the Turbos spooling up and having you kiss a tree hehe

Plus, the idea of lightweight RWD car + 1200bhp on the ring is enough to make sure that Ive sorted my life insurance and a will yes

I say, go for the full 1200bhp, then bring it to V,Max and blow the germans
9ff wagons 211mph record into the weeds.hehe

I love these threads. tongue out

I'm getting quite used to 640 bhp. Given my time again (watch this space) I would go for a bit more. wobble But from the vids I have seen, turbo power delivery seems somewhat uncontrollable, especially at 1000bhp upwards (have you seen the rev counter on the 211mph Swedish car on youtube ?). Must be a hell of a rush though. And power is addictive !!

There's a question - what is the most powerful normally aspirated Ultima out there ? No turbo, no superchargers either ? Anyone beat the factory's standard 720 ?

How you doing Kyle ? Will have to pop over and see how your engine rebuild is coming along. Hopefully next week I should be back to a normal(ish) routine !

Tony.

1200bhp: great in the pub, useless and a liability everywhere else.

The question 'how much for the road' is pointless really, as a 300hp Ultima would generally be as fast as a 700hp one on the road (IMHO) - you never get the space/surface/speed limit to really exploit it anyway.

Then again, it's an Ultima, so one would expect it to have a figure worthy of some bragging rights (especially if you only plan on having one).

500hp seems the norm now.

Go safe and reliable power. The car will be 100000000% more enjoyable if you can drive it without having to check the guages every 5 nanoseconds, constantly worrying about being stuck in traffic etc.etc.etc.

I have 1000+ and more would be useless, 1200 doesn't even work in the Pub because they will not believe you anyway smile

I run low boost 700 and that works fine and the car handles the power, on street however it's crazy because the acceleration is so brutal that you cant use it anyway. you are up in 250 km/h in notime and thats scary on the road. So would I like to have less power? NO WAY smile

If you had a nice traction control system with boost adjustable in each gear (i seen this on some of the crazy turbo motorbikes) so you can have power build with speed.

Its also the Hennessey Venom 1000 Twin Turbo Viper works where they limit boost at lower speeds.

"From launch to 60, there's 8 lb. of boost, which helps the bored and stroked V-10 to produce 800 bhp at the rear wheels. From 60 to 90 mph, boost is raised to 10 lb. for 900 bhp. From 90 to 120 mph, it's 14 lb. for a nice even 1000 bhp. And at 120 plus, 16 lb. of boost endows the big pushrod aluminum powerplant with 1100 bhp"

I would think that would work well for an ultima, cause if you can afford it you might as well do it, you will only regret it and end up wanting the 1200bhp figure.

It's turbocharged, so you simply wind the boost down to sensible levels for normal driving.

Another pointless bhp thread , the only person that needs more power is Lucky P as he is the only person i have seen that uses all of it and that is on the track ,for road use which generally means coping with traffic and crap like that its more important to have a smooth torquey motor making sensible power with a good delivery ,i believe a well driven 400 bhp moter will stick with most on the road infact it would probably be quicker !!!!
