my oil gauge is nearly on the lowest indicator on the dash computer readout, after only 3,300 miles.
a) is this ok?
b) what kind of oil is best to top it up with?

a) Its a bit high - but not totally unexpected. Mine does not use as much. But perhaps I'm being misled because I top mine up the moment it goes below full.

b) Mobil 1. Of course. Apparently you can use different oils but that will be what's in it (from new) and its probably best not to mix it. I don't use the "Motorsport" grade just regular Mobil 1.

This comes as a surprise to me, my boxster has 270.000km and does not use any oil at all.
maybe I am just lucky.

rsv1000, can I ask how you ran the car in, I have found Porkers that receive an early thrashing will use a lot more oil during their life time, with no other ill effects. If you haven't topped up since you had the car I would have thought this amount of usage is fine as the car will use a lot more whilst the engine beds in. Mobil 1 is the oil that gets N01 rating, but there is an argument about using non synthetic whilst the engine beds in, as synthetics reduce friction & hence initial wear !! On this subject Porkers always seem a lot faster at say 20k once the engine has loosened up.

Ours has needed no topping up at all. Were told it would use loads for the first few thousand miles, so stocked up on Mobil1. Anybody want some oil?

this was the first top up it has needed since new. took it easy for the first 2,000 miles, from 2k+ have been giving it some in increments. always let the engine warm to 80' ish. it took about a litre having done 3,400 miles.
