Hi, I just bought a 2002 XJR and the one fault I have found is that it does not sense the fact that the driver door is open.. I can not see a push-switch so I guess it's internal to the door.. Has anyone fixed this before? It couldn't be as simple as a blown door safety/puddle bulb could it? Thanks for any suggestions.

The switch is internal to the door latch mechanism. If it isn't working it would also be the reason your courtesy/puddle lamps don't light. It will probably require a new door latch unit be installed.

Thanks! Do you think some spray lubricant in the latch has any chance of success?

Probably not since it's an electrical component, anything electric usually either works or doesn't work. But give it a small shot maybe something is stuck.
