Hi all.

Does anyone use the 6 speed Getrag transaxle?

Are there any problems associated with this box that are not applicable to the G50's?

What is the shift quality like compared to the G50's?

Does anyone know what model of Getrag box we are actually talking about???

TIA
Andy

PS: Miraz, Nice to meet you.Hopefully we can catch up for a once we are a little further along with our respective builds!

I assume your talking about the getrag box as fitted to the can-am demo car.

The getrag box has a lovelly gear change as it uses a cable shift. I think the factory can supply them new cheaper than anywere alse (or did when I was building).

When I was looking to build I drove the can-am demo car and it was a real pleasure to use the box, unless your overseas I recomend you go to the factory and give it a try.

I think you should find no problems with fitting it in any ultima as its a standard fit but the cable shift will cost more and is designed to fit in the centre of the car.

I have fitted the Getrag box and find it really good. I have only had it on the road a couple of weeks but made the trip to Le-Mans and back.
I initially thought that the gears were too close but that was whilst I was running in, at under 3500 revs. Now I have started to open it up a bit, the gearbox is really feeling good. At 6000 revs I am doing about 170mph. The gear change feels very smooth and I think the ratios should be good for track. The fact that it is centre shift has made learning to drive it easier.

Ted told me the Getrag can't be used with the LS engines. Something about the starter being mounted on the engine block with the 6 spd vs the G50 on the trans. Don't really understand why though.

I think the box is the same one used in the current Porsche 996 non turbo. I used one behind the bmw v12.
I used a Boxster shifter and adjusted the lever length
on box to get the throw where I wanted it. Also the levers on the box had to to be cut off and put below
the pivot point to get 1st gear in its correct place in the H pattern.
It shifts soooo nice!
better than any 911 I've driven

I hadn't heard about not being able to use the Getrag box with the LS engines - I seemed to think that someone already had this setup up and running in an Ultima.

BTW - Doc Fudge is based south of Sydney, so popping up the factory carries a significant overhead. There is a high probability that I'll be building my car out here too.

I have made no changes to the linkage - I bought the gearbox and the centre mounted gear linkage kit from the factory and it fits very easily. Don't know how much the linkage cables were (I never worked out any of my costs in case the wife saw them) but I'm sure they were no more than the equivalent G50 parts which is Stage 10 in the price list. The cowl and gear knob you get with it finishes the cockpit off nicely

Thanks All!

Yeap, Miraz is right, a trip to the factory is a little bit further for me than most.. but Im not letting that stand in my way!!

Does anyone have a defintive answer as to way the 6 spd Getrag does not bolt up to the LS engines?

I suspect the Jeff may be on the right track.. Ill have to stick my melon under the bonnet of an LS engined car and have a look for the starter.

Have a word with Kenedy Engineered Products (www.kennedyeng.com/) who make the adapter plates. They'll give you the low down on which combinations of transaxle work with which engines and what type of starter you'll need and the detail behind the various options. Very helpful.

What they can't tell you is whether a starter motor will begin to poke through a chassis rail or other installation specific issues. For that you'll need to speak to Ultima.

on the corvette ls1 the starter is mounted to the engine. I am guessing when my trans (g50/50) gets here I will find the new starter is going to mount to the trans. You can see the starter in the lower right hand corner

You're right. With the G50/50, the starter motor is bolted to the transmission.
