How much cash are you looking to free up?

You will be disappointed in some respects - the T-cars are a genuine improvement over the RV8-era cars in driving terms, though they are more expensive to run.

What are you expecting to get for the Tam, and expecting to pay for the Chimp?

Just over 20k for the Tam, and around 10-11k for a chim...

Yup. You will free up the 9k, plus up to 2k per year in servicing. Enough, then, to make sense. It would break my heart, though, to have to do it.

Good luck with the 'golf clubs'.

A few years ago I went from a Tamora to a Griffith 500 (with a 911 in-between) and was disappointed. The Griffith had great character but if you like driving then the chassis is no where near as well sorted which I suppose you would expect when the Griff was developed 10 years before the Tamora. I only kept the Griff for 9 months as I missed having a decent handling car. I dare say that if you know what mods to make to a Griff then the handling can be improved. Why not sell your Tamora and buy an earlier one? I bet £12k could pick up an 02 Tam with 25k on the clock if you find a desperate seller.

I went from a Chim 450 to a Tamora, (with a VX220 Turbo in between!). Yes, the Tam handles much better, but the Chim has bags of character and at the end of the day, you'd still have a TVR and circa £9K in your wallet.

Hi,

I've just bought a Tamora but still have the Chim (which I'm trying to sell). They're such very different cars! Drove the Chim into work this morning for a change and still love the old girl with that burbling V8 - if I could afford to have both I would - but the Tam's the one I want to keep when forced to choose!

Worth remembering that the T cars are rarer (potential future classic) than chims etc. as well!
Although every TVR is pretty rare in the scheme of things i guess.

Surely an £11k Chim is going to cost more in replacement parts etc to offset the servicing savings vs a fairly new Tamora?

I thought the Tam/3.6 s6 wasn't quite that bad as the AJP V8 and big 4.0 S6's when it came to running/servicing? When I was adding up servicing costs at a decent indy the difference seemed negligible between a Griff/Chim 500 and a Tammy...!?

Not an expert, I remember lots of people saying a Cerbie was pretty £££ wrt to keeping in good shape etc, but didn't realise the Tam's were that much worse than an older Chim/Griff to be saving nearly £2k a year!

A good Tamora costs no more to run and service than an RV8 car. I spent about £6-800 a year on servicing and minor niggles, and there's plenty of indies about for S6 cars.

As for slow compared to a Chimaera? nono They're all about the same, but a Chim/Griff feel faster because of the low end torque and all it's attendant drama. But if you want to get point-to-point quickly, a Tamora will run away from any stock RV8 model. The twistier a road is, the better the Tamora gets.

BTW, I miss mine a lot. biggrin

The advert you post shows a car at 18995. I bet the garage has £3500 in that for the warranty/profit etc. so that would be leaving the owner with circa £15k. Give or take a bit of a haggle and I'm not that far off the mark. Especially if a car is a slightly less than mainstream colour combo (as some TVR's can tend to be!) and needs a few things fettling on it.

You wouldn't be disappointed if you changed from the Tamora to a good Griffith - but then you might have to put money to the Tamora proceeds to get a good un.

I think you might. I went from a very sorted Chim 500 to a T350 and the handling and straight-line performance of T350 is simply in a different league. I take your point though that the Griff is a very special car and that driving on normal roads there wouldn't be much to use between thenm performance-wise.

Hmm i think you might. Ive been having a similar kind of dilemna since buying my T350RR. I had a Griff 500 for a good few years before changing to the T. I keep going through periods of thinking i want a Griff again and that i should sell the T but then i take the backroads in the T and im reminded about the actual difference between the two cars and i change my mind again. The two are absolutely leagues apart in the handling department they really are. Also once the revs are up in the right area a good T350 will leave a good Griff 500 absolutely standing still on the twisties. The griff will always be my favourite TVR and i still might revert back at some point, but as a drivers car it will be a step backwards for me personally without a doubt. The T is a genuine proper modern sportscar, get out of a T and straight in to Griff or chimeara and it is immediately apparent the Griff and the chimeara are 20 yr old designs and you can feel it when you drive them. All IMHO of course....Now im off to read those Griff adds !!!!!!!rotate
