Usuall stunning and depressing (in equal measure) pics

IMHO this one should have been the overall winner (no, not 'cos he was using a D2X, but because he's alive to post it!)

btw: it looks a LOT better, larger (in the BBC magazine)

The bear is trying to work out if the D2X will be as hard to digest as last weeks Hasselblad.

Great picture.

Right place, right time I guess - where as when I go looking for bears, I get the lazy ones.

It was taken at 12mm focal length! 12mm! That must have been stupidly close!

"I’d been so busy taking pictures of the salmon in the Ozernaya River in southern Kamchatka, east Russia, I didn’t notice the bear until it was a metre away. It was a terrible shock. I kept calm enough to take the picture but only later did I realise how" ... etc

...and in the BBC mag it looked to me like the flash fired?? Can't be a good idea that - that close to a big bear and you fire a flash in it's face! Brave man.

Yeah I thought that - am sure the red-eye's been shopped out! Don't think the eyes are quite right, but then I don't see a lot of bears up close. Unless I'm on a night out in B'ham obviously.

Did see the comment, but at 12mm (on APS-C) that's got to be closer than a metre!

Nicely composed though... yikes
