My current R1 has done almost 39,000 miles in 2 1/2 years and hasn't missed a beat, actually it's been a fantastic bike, but it needs at least £1,000 spending on it (major service, chain & sprockets, I think the clutch is on it's way out & 2 new tyres).......So I've seen a couple of black 2006 R1's for around £6,250 and both with just 2,800 miles on them and I can put the exhaust and other bits I have on mine on a 2006 R1......but should I do it or just spend the money on mine and run it into the ground, the difference to change wouldn't be too much more.

Now I know I will get the 'go buy a Fazer or more sensible bike to commute' comments, but I want only one bike that I can use daily (as I have with my 05 R1) and one that can be used on track as we've a couple track days planned for next year. I've decided to stay on the bike for commuting and not go back to the train so a Ducati 998 or 1098 are off the list for the time being.

I don't know what to do.....scratchchin

On a much lower rung of the ladder, I had this conversation a couple of months ago. Keep my Old Mk1 TDM or buy a new one.

As it was for commuting where reliability was key, I decided better the devil you know. I spent out on new tyres, C&S, chain oiler, pads and a service. The bike now runs like new and just feels "right".

In your position where you're also doing trackdays, I'd just service what you have and run it til it dies (or everything falls off) before spending out on a newer one.

with so many great bikes out there i doubt id ever replace like for like, too many others to try if im going to splash out. id keep what you've got till it dies, the tattier it gets the more places you can leave it without it getting nicked.

Although you say it need 1k most of that is tyres and chain/sprocket so if you bought a new one it wouldn't be long before you needed them for the new bike so I wouldn't factor it in personally (although it you don't put them on the old bike the value will drop). I'd only get the new one if I wanted it because your old one will just go on and on.

My blade is coming up to 32k, just had new tyres and chain/sprocket and will need a clutch soon. I'll just keep running it as a commuter because it works and I no longer care if it gets scratched, wet or dirty. I dropped it in the car park a few weeks ago and it makes no odds. Besides, with the top box, heated grips and satnav it's the ideal commuter wink

Instead of buying something new I've bought a second hand 748s to polish (yeah right), play with at the weekends and (if I can work up the courage) take on track.

In short just do what you *want* to do wink

The problem is I've owned a CBR1000RR and had nothing but problems with it so I don't want to go back to a Honda for now, I don't want a Kawasaki and I'm not sure on the Suzuki build quality for the bike to last as well as a Yamaha, so a like for like swap wouldn't be too bad as I have a fair amount of bits that I can transfer on to a newer R1 in about two hours.....decisions....decisions rolleyes

I've just had a quote for a clutch fitted using OE parts for £180, so not too bad...I already have a front 2CT so a rear will only be another £100, C&S about £150 and a service about another £100, therefore, totalling £530......hmmmmscratchchin

That leaves you the 4k it would cost you to trade up to buy a shiney track and weekend toy and a couple of hundred you saved from your fix-your-current-bike fund to insure it and you're still better off... merry christmas wink

estimates of financial situation may be widly simplistic and ill-conceived and badly thought out

Well not quite £4k more like almost £2k as I would be selling my current R1. My insurance is only £306 fully comp.

can't see how a 2006 R1 offers anything over a 2005.

I'd wait a year and get the 2007 R1 next year. It'll be in the £6k region by then.

I agree it offers nothing whatsoever apart from mine's done 39,000 miles and needs some work and the other is mint and has done 2,700 miles and I can put all the goody bits from mine on a 2006.

The problem with the 2007 bike is that if you want cans, crash bungs, double bubble screen etc, it's going to cost you another £1,200 on top.....I've already gone down that route and looked at costs....hence my thinking a newer identical bike would be the way to go scratchchin

There was a few subtle changes to the 2006 R1, ones that I have no idea about.

I was more than happy with my 05 R1, in nearly 16000 miles the only things to fail were a rear indicator bulb, (aftermarket indicators letting water in) and a snapped fairing bracket, caused by me.

Like you say, you can reuse all the after market stuff.

I'd go for it.

John.

Had a good look round a 2006 Black R1 with 2,700 miles on it at lunch time today and if I can strike the right deal I think I'm going to go ahead with it as it was rather nice!

Would be a change mate, wouldn't it?! Not sure...I really can't get over the noise of them whilst idleing...once they're going though, there's nothing better.

Still dunno.....HTH!!

If the cost to change isn't much more, you'd just as well go for the newer bike as surely it will retain more value than just slinging money at yours?

Right, slight change of plan I've just been offered a 2005 Ducati 999S with 2,500 miles on the clock, Ducati Corse/Termi can and ECU, open clutch cover and all the original bits for £6K......the bike belongs to a friend of mine and I rode the bike in France last year for about 200 miles on the way back from our Alps trip and I really liked the bike.......it is totally straight and never been ragged or down the road......I know it's not as aesthetically pleasing as a 998 or a 1098 but I think I've just bagged a bargain and I've agreed to buy it wink
