Hi,

I'm thinking of having a few mods done over winter for my 99 4.5, I'm aiming for a very fast road (acceleration rather than terminal velocity) and fast track car setup, without compromising to much. Basically looking to enhance with latest know how and technology within a reasonable budget.

Transmission

Ditch the aged 4.5 hydratrak diff for a 3.73 coned diff and change gearbox for close ratio box.

Engine

Polished and gas flowed heads, Tuscan racing cams, new valves and followers, larger and finer injectors, forged rods, new piston heads and raised compression with a billet steel crank.

Suspension

Replace all rose joints, drop links and roll bars with aircraft quality bearings and probably Gaz gold shocks with remote resevoirs and uprated springs.

Ecu

Emerald or equivalent

Already have ACT induction system and comp. manifold and big bore exhaust

Would appreciate comments, opinions and suggestions

Sounds very interesting - what is the "starting" power/torque of your setup (I'm guessing around 400bhp given short induction + mapping? What sort of figures would you expect post-mods?

I'm only putting out 373 bhp at mo with about 349 lbs of torque, am loosing about 20% compression across the engine, but I'm not using a lot of oil so probably just a top end rebuild required.

Hence values, springs, followers and head work etc

Don't have a target bhp value and torque figure but the config. is close to a racing tuscan without too much compromise, I'm interested in getting the car up to 150+ very quickly on a fast straight(and stopping of course!) and am prepared to give up the top end figure 5-10 miles.

Am keeping my original gearbox and Diff, just in case I hate it and need to revert.

As far as cost is concerned, I have a very competitive quote for the work so well see if that is miles from reality.

Ah, understood - sounds like an ideal time to get the mods done then - keep us posted, and good luck with it smile

I'd suggest wheels and tyres as the best mods for real performance gains with that lot, otherwise traction is going to be an issue...

Its hopefully our next big mod (probably after body off rebuild time!!)

I have done a fair bit to mine, if you have gone for the “gearbox man” upgraded close ratio set as I have, then you will defiantly be getting to 150 much quicker, have a look back for the thread called latest details.

The stuff you are doing to the engine isn’t that far off what I am doing,
I picked up a conrod big end shell, so while it’s open I am going for a billet crank
Was sure my car was going to have one, but no.
Upgraded lighter rods and pistons. This may change a bit as I am still waiting for recommendations.

What the engine builder did say was the engine looked excellently put together, and was impressed with the power out put from a two valve.
There is a little improvement to the porting, but valves will be left alone.
There were slight signs of valve guide wear not much.
Wonder if it is worth going to 4.7?

So basically an engine rebuilds, not the end of the world, infact everything else has been upgraded why not do it once and for all.

Gator keep us posted this is what we need to liven things up. You mentioned a “comp manifold” what is that? Where did it come from? How much?
Thanks and good luck a 450 bhp 4.5Cerb can’t be far away.

It's the exhaust system mainly, the normal manifold is probably holding it back by 10 hp.
The perfect setup would be a twin turbo with two flamespitting snarling side exit exhausts.

How do you know you are losing 20% compression? If so, where is it going? Thats a lot of air going somewhere!!

Nick if you want billet and a 4.7 then see if John Reid still has any laying about, I'm sure that is where Craig picked his up.

He used to run the Motor sports division back at the factory and has his own business 'Readman racing' and or 'Grantura engineering' if you google them. Drop Craig a mail he'll have the full SP as it was a couple of years ago. Failing that Dom at Power may know the where abouts of one.

Thats what i have on the race car. 10" wide at the back 9" at the front. Moddified the body to take 280 sectiopn slicks.

Would probably be able to sqqueeze 295 r888's on at the back.
