Sounds like a sticking throttle to me. Have a look under the bonnet when the car is doing this and see if the throtle is returning all the way to the stop, if not it needs removing and cleaning, air gap resetting, and it might need to go on the computer to reset the idle speed. Any further questions please ask. Other options are air leaks.

I bought the same car, as a run around loved it to bits not that fast but smooth quiet cosseting....

Then my son says can I borrow it for 2 minutes ........

Someone gave him a lift back he has a cut eye and arm, "where’s me Jag" I asks "fella coming other way run me off the road dad I had to veer off into a field but it's not too bad!!" We get to the field "was you going too fast" no dad honest car went through the hedge and rolled.....this is how far it rolled!

Obviously he was a very very lucky lad and testament to the car's inherent strength and build that he walked away, yes he got the biggest rollicking but someone up there was on his side. Trouble is 2 years later and he still pesters me for the keys to my M5!
