With the prospective sale of Jaguar and Land Rover to persons unknown, where do we think second hand values of X, S and XJ's is heading? Could it get as bad as Rover MG, or do we think that situation was so totally different it couldn't happen to JLR? By contrast the economic situation now is worse than it was then, and all manufacturers are suffering.

Well LR at least is making money haven't they just had there best every quarter?. My understanding from others posting here that are closer to these thing J & LR are more closely connected than merely being joined at the hip. Jaguar seem to be most of the way through developing a new generation of models. XK is out and dong nicely, XF must be pretty much ready to role off the production lines (so all the money's already been spent) and they must be someway into the new XJ (though I personally think they need to change the model's name - coz it's nothing like an XJ, however good it looks when we finally get to see it)

So I guess things are rather different to the situation with Rover. They didn't have any new models, they didn't have a healthy part of the business and there sales were nose diving.

Around my way (Berkshire - AKA BMWland) I'm seeing more and more XJs around these days. There were 5 or 6 high end (thinging about it XJRs) X350s in the car park at the sports club this morning, as well as some new model XKs. A couple of years ago there were typically only a couple and that included my X300.

Anyone know what the UK sales figures are looking like?
Both the local dealers seem to have pulled up their socks in the last year and seem to have been making much more of an effort to market the cars.

Running costs have just as much influence on second hand value as whatever the current fortunes of the manufacturer may be.

I can see a situation arising over the next few years when large engined cars are almost impossible to give away, let alone sell for a good price, if the government continues with the proposed increases in VED duty and fuel tax.

The running costs of second hand cars has always been a major influencing factor. Big luxo barges have always depreciated at great speeds. The bigger the engine, the fast they go down in price, unless there is something very special about the model.

When we were looking at buy b8hex's car, she wanted an MB E class estate. For new car prices the 320CDi was cheapest, the 320 was a couple of grand more. The 430 was loads and loads more, best part of 10grand if I remember right. For second hand ones though, there was b****r all difference between the values of 320s and 430s and the CDI was worth a bucket load more. Total value inversion. And that was before the differences in VED were introduced.

It is a different situation to Rover. Rover was 'sold' for a £1 to the 'businessmen' (used in the loosest way) in the consortium that bought them. The brand was dead, worthless and the reason is was so cheap was that it needed a small fortune to develop a new range of models. Jag and LR on the other hand are being sold for big money $1bn, plus all the little extras.

With Jaguar, I believe it has had the money it needs to jump start the business, with the all new XK, XF and XJ all funded. It now needs sales to generate the cash to develop the next generation of vehicles. LR however are at the end of their new development cycle and need shed loads of cash for the next new Rangie and Disco/Sport which are due from now.

The latest figures from Ford indicated that Jag/LR made a small profit. Jag I would think are still losing a lot of money, but what do you expect when they have only one car to sell in the range. Wait until 2009, if there is no good news by then, we can revisit the topic and compare Rover to the dimise of Jag/LR.

Jag and LR are also wealthy brands, the rich only get richer, so not such a big impact to future trends.

Well, I have done my bit by buying an S-Type. I have to say it was a good deal for a highly specified one year old car. At least that's me back in a Jag.clapbeerclap

I would have loved to buy one of the last of the S-Type R's, which are fantastic value, but its beyond me for the time being. I have bought a November '06 3.0 V6 Sport with the manual box, 15,000 miles, Black/Charcoal. Can't wait.

I would say they are softening, but probbaly only in line with normal depreciation.

I've had my eye on a new style XJR to replace my 1998 one, but was never willing to pay anything near 20K for it.

WEll, suddenly, in the last week I have started to see them pop up for close to 15K. I was offered a couple of 100K+ milers earlier in the week for 15K, and today have just purchased a mint, 2003 XJR, from a decent jaguar specialised dealer for 15995. 92K miles, full service history, still with over 6 months of jaguar warranty and just serviced 2 weeks ago. I am well chuffed!

Now to stick my old XJR on ebay!!!
