A3 Air-flow meter repair?

My wifes car has developed an intermittant loss of power, last time it did this we repalced the Airflow Meter and it was sorted. I think I remember reading on these forums ( have searched) that you can clean it instead of replacing?

Any advice?

Other culprits maybe dirty throttle body or EGR valve (though on this I have to be honest I'm not sure on). Just heard of someone on ukmkivs who'd helped his dodgy idle.
