BMW 540i purchasing advice

I'm a long time reader, but this is my first forum post.
I'm on the verge of buying a 98 BMW 540i with manual box.
Was wondering if anyone out there had advice to pass on in relation to this car - would be greatly appreciated!

not advice as such, but ive had my 96' 540 for just over a year and its been damn fine. utterly reliable and ridiculously quick! although mostly roads dont seem long enough to use all the power. mine came with FBMWSH at 140000 miles but still feels tight and solid. i would say almost drives like new. its effortless on the motorway and youll always feel relaxed at the end of a long journey. at the same time its great if you want to get a bit spirited with it. my only complaint about it is that its not the most exciting car to look at, wolf in sheeps clothing and all that, but i guess that could also be seen as part of its charm.

the cabin is a very nice place to be, really well thought out. when you shut the door behind you the heavy clunk is very reassuring. its seriously well made. all in all its been a joy to own. you know youll love it!

Hey Guys, thanks for the replies - very helpful and much appreciated (aside from that 911 comment!)
Was actually my brother who put me on to Pistonheads and he's on his second 911 and loving it... Not ideal for me with 2 young kids, but a wonderful motor indeed.
