The place we are going for the Christmas meal, the Red Lion in Icklingham is rather good.

The best in town (I think) is Maison Bleue www.maisonbleue.co.uk but it IS expensive.

The Rede Plough (Rede) SW of Bury - excellent food but need to book for Fri/Sat night to make sure of a table. 
Afleck Arms is nice (Dalham - W of Bury)
Had a 'simple meal' at The Fox in Ousden (W of Bury) a couple of weeks ago - small basic menu but food excellent - nothing fancy (the pubs a proper spit and sawdust type) - food was freshly cooked by a mother type figure and not a reheat job and all for £6.95!
The best in Bury has got to be the Priory Hotel - excellent service (silver) and food but a tad expensive for a 'general' nightout, but worth doing as an annual treat!

Went to the Queen's Head at Hawkedon (SW of BSE) on Sunday...Absolutely fantastic.
Middle of nowhere hard to find village- proper pub- serving proper beer & food- delights such as Munkjack stew (highly recommended) & a cracking bustling atmosphere.
Somebody mentioned the Affleck at Dalham... Virtually my local. Note that it has changed hands recently. Used to be very good- but avoid eating there unless prawn cocktail & scampi & chips float your boat.
Another good tip = Plough at Ashley- not cheap but great food- although closer to Newmarket than it is to Bury.

I'm still not sure where the young lady I'm taking out lives but having had a look at a few menus I think it'll be either the Leaping Hare, Bildeston Crown, the Rushbrooke Arms or Maison Bleue depending on which is most conevient to get too.

Well we went to the Leaping Hare in the end. It was only a few minutes drives from hers which was handy!
As for the food, it was excellent! Traditional ingredients, cooked beautifully and well presented. The portions didn't look big at first and I was expecting to be a little disappointed but by the time we'd finished the main we we're both sufficiently full. The service was excellent too. The only complaint we had was with the chairs- they were really laid back which made sitting up and eating a bit awkward.
The only slight cock up was that we unwittingly ordered a sparkling wine (the vineyards own, I hasten to add) which in itself was no bad thing, it was vary pleasant. However it gave the waiter the idea that we we're celebrating something and he made a few remarks that, given we hardly knew each other, we found quite amusing
So anyway, thanks for all the great suggestions. No doubt I'll visit some of the others some time soon.
oh, and I should add my companion for the evening wasn't bad either.
