Not something I'd thought about before, but just reading a thread on P&P prompted me to ask how they work out the tax banding on kit cars? Is it done purely on the engine, and if so are they taking into account if you are on a Q, age related or new plate?

I've never liked Q plates, but as Q plates only have the visible smoke test, if it follows that they are also in the lowest tax band despite engine size, it's got to become a consideration.

Either that or build the car in a way that gets it a pre 73 age related plate and rebuild it how you actually want it later...

I thought it was the other way round, these days? If you have a car that isn't emissions banded (or tax exempt), then they charge the highest tax band for it?

I'm pretty sure that was the case on my Sylva last time I taxed it, though I must admit I just tend to hand over the money without much thought!

Yes, £180 on my Q-plate 2litre Tiger.

I think only new vehicles that are type-approved to be rated under the new CO2-emissions based system are taxed using the new levels, anything not approved/CO2 rated goes on the old system.

Which is a plus for BEC's. I hadn't thought about the tax savings.

Yep mine's a 2 litre so around £100 for 6 months.

Mine is £180. It's an age related plate and costs more to tax than my wife's Multipla. Which hardly seems fair.

My Aeon finished in September, with a 2007 registration, tested to most recent standards (engines built after 2003) is £180 as well.

I believe it relate to age and size of engine. Anything over 1.8 L and pre 95 IIRC is £180 there are some that qualify on emmisions tho.
