If it's got a badge on the bonnet as opposed to the grill avoid it. The first S-Types were hopeless.

Perhaps I disagree. I had a badge-on-bonnet S-Type 4 litre for 3 years and did around 70,000 miles. No serious problems. I was pleased enough with it to replace it with a new badge-on-radiator S Type 4.2 Litre SE which is nearing 4 years old and 60,000 miles. Although the newer car is a good improvement on the old model, I've had a lot of serious problems with it...like it's on it's third gearbox (which looks on its way out too), new wheel bearings, new steering rack etc. I do think the S-Type is a good car particularly the large engine models.

Bear in mind the 3.0 litre engine is Ford not Jaguar derived. This could be good or bad news!

The 3 litre engine is actually far more reliable than a 4.0 litre.

The manual gearbox (Getrag 221) is a good unit, but make sure that the synchros work well as they are not rebuildable.

If the rest of the vehicle has no obvious faults then I would strongly consider purchasing.

Mine's midnight black. I've got it now and its tucked up until the weekend when I plan to get the polish out.

I didn't have much experience of driving S-Type's previously and I am surprised how good it is in every respect.

As said numerous times before, so any one reading this get this through your heads
The V6 has a Ford block, everything else is bespoke and was designed and developed at Jaguar Whitley. That means ,Pistons, valve gear, crankshaft, cylinder head camshafts, cam chain etc etc

Someone will come along shortly and say the X-Type is just a mondeo.

It is a rather uphill battle Jag are in, to overcome a lot of misconceptions after its parenting with Ford.
