My heater has packed up!!! Grrr

Or rather I think somthing has happened to the fan motor. Anyone know how to access it?

Pictures would be good if you have them!

Ta for the photo.

Managed to get to the fan via the hatch in the battery compartment. Bloomin awkward to get at it! Well, there appears to be power going to the motor and the two wires are firmly clamped on to the contacts. But still no joy after a few hours of fiddling (with the car).

I need some advice please.

When I disconnected the wires I managed measured 6V with the heater switch at full deflection. Is that normal??
Anybody know what voltage the heater fan is rated for? I would like to connect the battery directly to the fan to see if the switch or wire is broken in some way. But I'm afraid that I might damage the motor.

My suspicion is the motor’s knackered. Anyone know where to get a new one?

Lastly, how do you get to the heater through the engine bay?? I tried before, removed all the screws and cut around the silicon, but it just wouldn't budge. I guess there's a knack

Sorry, lots of questions. Any wisdom out there?????

No, I'm not sure. But I did read a voltage so I assumed it was ok. To back up my suspicions I would like to rule out the motor by putting a direct voltage (from the battery on to the contacts.

Zoom - I have one of those heater fans amongst my race spares - it would have been fitted to Tuscan racer to demist the screen in wet races. It is quite old but I suspect has not been used much, and the fan spins up when I put 12 v across it. You can have it for £20 plus the postage if its any use to you

Kind regards

Andy

Cheers for the offer Andy but I don’t think I'll be needing it! biggrin I spent some more time fiddling a couple of days ago and I've managed to track the problem down to the heater amplifier. Even better than that, I was able to fix it today by resoldering a dry joint!! woohoo

For those of you that don’t know, the amplifier is a small metal box about the size of a pack of cards with two rather large capacitors sticking out of it. Usefully, it is also marked up as a 'Tamora heater amplifier' so there's no excuse for not recognising it. It’s located under the glove box and is accessed by removing the foot-well carpet. It’s also considerably easier to get to than the fan!! Apparently, this is a common fault that results from a high current draw and thin wires, thus the connector plug can melt and evidently so does the solder on the circuit board!

Exactly the same happened to mine, comments before were don't wack fan up fully, but since the re-solder it's been great smile

Humm, not much point having something that you cant use, so I think I'll keep using it as normal and fix it as needed.

Think you missed my point, it was not that it should not be fixed, it was simply that when I posted about mine someone said it was badly wired in the firstplace and not running it full power helped.

I ran mine full power before and after the fix I still run it full power, have to in this weather with the roof down or I'd become a snowman.

biggrin
