Picking up a Griff 500 from fernhurst next weekend, but can't decide whether to get the sports exhaust. I had a V8S about 10 years ago and it sounded gorgeous. The standard Griff 500 sounds muted and they suggested replacing the perferated section of pipe in the silencer with a solid pipe. They had a griff in the showromm which had had the mod and it was LOUD, maybe too loud, but it was inside and the exhausts wer 6 inches from the wall. As it was pouring with rain it wasn't practical to get the car outside, but I need to decide before thursday whether I want it done. Its not reversable so don't want to get it wrong. I don't intend revving the car in the drive, so hopefully at idle it shouldn't be too anti-social, but I want the car to sound good not just loud. Does anyone out there have this type of mod and/or comparison with V8S. I know its all a bit subjective, but any input would be appreciated,

cheers, Steve

It's not at all loud. The extra noise in the cabin is hardly noticable with the roof off compared to previously unmodded - I have heard some people wear earplugs but I can't see why.
You can always turn the radio up or just take it out completely as I've done in the pre cat for the last 14 months.
JFDI.

Why do you need to decide before Thursday. Its an easy mod and anyone can do it for around £100-£150. Why don't you wait to hear one thats been done before deciding.

There are those who like them loud, and others like me who prefer something quieter. I changed from a V8S to a Griffith 500, with standard exhaust. I found the V8S noise level to be quite tiring whereas the noise level in the Griffith much more comfortable. I suggest you live with the standard exhaust for a while and get it changed later if you want it louder.

I've considered some kind of exhaust mod for my 500 when it's back on the road and I've seen a number of the video clips of various mods, but they all seem a bit raspy?!? I know you really need to hear them for real as the video's don't give you the 'real' sound, but... if you're after a deeper, more baritone sound.... which is the best exhaust mod to go for?

I did mine in stages, put straight through pipes in the silencer first, later on I then removed the pre cats, then later went the whole 9 yards and removed the main cat, to be honest, you only get a lot of noise when you really boot it, driving on a motorway cruising is quite comfortable, still being able to hold a conversation with the passenger.

Mine's had the mod done by Offords and I love the sound of it. Not too loud, not too quiet. It's just like the standard one till you put your clog down.

Pops and bangs a treat on the over-run too!

Was that the cheerybomb thingy? If so, how much did it cost mate?

Worth it ?

I'm toying with the idea but I'm put off a bit by the volume not being acceptable on track.

I suppose I could get silencers for this problem.

Day to day it's not that much louder until you floor it. If you happen to be alongside my favourite concrete armco though it's like bloody Nascar cloud9

You wouldn't get on track with it but for day to day fun it's great. An added bonus is that if you floor it then throttle off quick it cracks like a shotgun hehe

I'd certainly spend the money again.

I don't think all mods are equal but Offords do a mail order service if you ship it to them IIRC and they have "tuned" the mod over the years they have been doing it.

Dunno how it affects HP as I haven't had mine on the rollers.

Offords Cherry Bomb woohoo - 1000 miles in a weekend across France was fine, not overly noisy inside the car at all and even had the wife with me and she didn't complain

Mine's had the precats and main cat removed, plus the silencer cut open and the pipes sleeved, and it's definitely not too loud for everyday use (although I don't think I'd be allowed on any trackdays biggrin !!)
It used to pop and bang all the time at first, but this was sorted by fitting an optimised Tornado chip - now it just sounds like a raw nascar V8, pure evil !!

All good information, thanks. I have heard a few example on YouTube and a couple sounded like a Yank muscle cars which I don't think is the true TVR sound. I think the pre-Cat griffs and V8S had the definitive sound - one which let you knew it was a TVR before you saw it. Some of the conversions would lead you to beleive that a something from the Dukes of Hazard was about to come round the corner!

Maybe I'm just being too fussy. I wanted to get it done this week to save another trip to Fernhurst, but I think I'll take it as standard for now and try and listen to some more over the next few weeks....or will I!!

This is one problem that I have with tampering with the 500's exhaust.

I'm not completely sold on a cherrybomb conversion for the exact same reason - it sounds very 'yank'.

I want a similar sound to my old 350i which was proper TVR noise. I suppose that I am ultimately after an exhaust that will recreate that sound.

I just dont get why you boys want to make a loud & brash noise ? The gain in performance is almost zero so why behave like Essex boys on a Friday night ? Standard pipes sound fantastic. Spend your money on tyres & driving skills.

You don't buy a Tiv if you're the shy and quiet type. I want the noise because I love it... And why not spend the money on tyres and suspension too?

After hearing that I want a decat cloud9
