In a desire to mask all the clatter made by my cossie Merc (no there's nothing wrong with it, I've even rebuilt the top end and it's the same!) I am very tempted by the sweet sound cars with carbon airboxes make. I've seen aftermarket canister type boxes on VR6s which sound great. I've found this item here which is tempting to try out especailly at merely £40 +vat.

REMOTE CARBON FIBRE CANISTER AIR FILTER
  1. CARBFIL Real carbon fibre air filter canister with black
ABS end caps. Fine, free-flowing stainless mesh washable
cone inside. Vortex-enhancing ball in inlet end. Ensure cold
air intake. Mount anywhere and duct. 130mm diameter x
200mm case size. I mtr Length of 75mm diameter convoluted
aluminium ducting. Set of 3 rubber reducing sleeves
(75mm to 60mm, 75mm to 65mm,and 75mm to 70mm) and
3 hose clips. Includes lightweight stainless mounting band
and stainless pinch bolt. £40 (£47.00 inc vat)
Does anyone have any comments? The standard airbox does not look a complex affair with resonators or anything, just a standard panel filter airbox, so I hope I wouldn't lose anything by fitting this. Am I a mug to even think about this?! There's 2 intake air temperature sensors (one for injection, one for ignition - stupid eh?) which I'll have to deal with obviously.

comments welcomed

I've seen these before and am seriously considering for my own car - it seems too cheap but if it is junk I'll just flog it on ebay!

What car's yours? I'm wondering if the holes are big enough to get enough air into mine, which is 2.5 and 200bhp.

Also what are the hole size adaptors for - 75mm down to 70, 65 or 60mm, why? Is it so it adapts to your cars existing intake pipes maybe?

I need to go out and measure my car as it uses a panel filter directly on top of the intake plenum so I'll have to remove all of that.

A friend of mine has a CDA airbox on his car and it works very well.
This thing looks like a copy of his filter.

You can allways put it back on ebay if its not right.

Hi

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but I have one of those in my garage.
I think I have still a piece of pipe in red.

Let me know if you would like some more details

Not a hijack at all - whereabouts are you (the power of pistonheads informs me somewhere around Oxford...)? I'm in Cheltenham you see so could be interested in a purchase if it's just sitting around doing nothing. Is it one of the ones in the first pic, or a CDA one like this

Also is the filter present with it (I think they have a filter inside??).

Mine is a mk2 vw golf fitted with a mk4 golf turbo engine (200bhp also) so my current intake isn't standard anyway. I suffer with drawing in warm air from the rad so an enclosed filter should work well.

It came witha CF airbaox and all of it was fitted to a Exige so it could be a CDA.

I'll report tonight!
