I was just looking at Porsche monthly sales for the month of June for North Amrica (US & canada) Porsche' main market for sales.
It seems that the Cayenne is the star, with Boxster sales falling 53% AND 911 FALLING 24% in June from figures quoted for last June.

model - sales for month - sales YTD-

Boxster (all) - 520 - 3467
911 (all models) - 790 - 4752
cayenne 91ll mods)- 1401 - 4996

There it is so far this year the Cayenne is the best selling Porker in USA.

It looks like it was a sound business decision.

I personally cannot see this lasting and would be amazed if these sectors had the same relationship at the end of the year.

Porsche aren't dummies and as the most profitable car maker on the planet have to defend their cash flow.

It's merely cyclical and just as Merc are currently larging it up over BMW in certain other sectors, the new 997 will probably see a reversal in the 911's current fortune.

Surprised at the Boxster figs though...

Is the Z4 impacting so much already, Greg?

Well, perhaps understandable if so. Then again, although I like it, I'da thought the Munchen styling a bit too radical for mass appeal, a la far 'safer' Boxster.

Hmm...

I think it is down to advance orders on K-N and the Z4 350Z have been out in the US for a while,,,don't forget the Boxster figures are for the '03 facelift model as well!

Der is that really you or an imposter? I only ask as i could actually read your post without the P/heads Der translator...

Aren't the most popular selling vehicles in the US pick up trucks?

Phew, and here was us thinking you'd found the ability to type normally, old boy.

Hooray for insanity.

CS was right - both the Zee-4 and the 350-Zee have been available in the US for yonks. Its us poor buggers that have had to wait/still waiting for them to hit the shores of Blighty

Interesting Clubsport, but then I think we all knew it would be a goer, just look at the number of 4x4's on the road (particularly in the states) & add in Porkers prestige badge..SOLD.
I think the 911 & Boxter sales also tell a tale (appreciating that they also have a recession over there) the latest facelifts were very conserative particularly on the Boxter & the competition has played catch up. The new Z4 for example looks great & drives very well for less money, I'm no BMW fan but it's true. The "S" is much better but about £10k more !! We now also have a fleet of Merc's & Audi's that can keep up with (at least on the straights) or go faster than the 996TT let alone the rest of the Porker range. I know there is much more to drivers car than just power & I love my car (& certainly don't hanker after an AMG) but I think Porsche MUST look carefully at the 997, which is still just another facelift in reality. I for one don't want to step back in time to the 993 look they are suggesting, been there, seen & done that !! I would like to see a sleek modern design alla Carrera V10, the boxter with 300hp plus (easily done) C2's with 400 & the Turbo up to 500+ with ceramic brakes as standard on the TT & the current TT brakes on the other 996's. Porkers have always been seen as the pinacle of high performance motoring, long may this be so. Rant over !!!!!!!!!!!!

Please give us a 'road test' report after you've put some miles on it. We'd be interested to know a little more from the horse's mouth

Dom thats a little bit rude calling his new car a horses mouth and you a moderator & every thing.
Anyway I think the it looks more like a hippos mouth, or maybe a walrus's

I am totally gobsmacked by this news and feel a late-life crisis coming on. That 'Dr Wedekin' takes the prize....should have anticipated it tho, I got a prize of a Porsche calendar at a recent quiz evening and its full of pictures of Leipzig factory and freshborn Cayennes being released onto the highway.
Maybe its possible to switch on to 'the brand' and forget about the racing heritage. I liked my 356 when Porsche was less well known to the general public but becoming a legend at Le Mans.....I liked my 993 when Porsche was past its competition peak and still regarded as a city yobs toy....I like my 996 even better though its not a 'real' Porsche...and if Dr W now invests in racing, making Carrera GTs etc with the money he makes from Cayennes then it all comes together, we can return to the original point of 'the brand'

IMO the Cayenne is a big step forward for Porsche, like the Boxster was when it first came out.
The company first had a reputation for building tractors and other non-sports car related vehicles, so as a comeback to the source it is not that bad !

However the Cayenne is very likely to have a career like that of the 928 : mostly bought as company cars, not quite enthused apart from very small circles, second hand prices quickly falling, potentially off-putting high running costs, etc.

I certainly hope so, Thom. I quite fancy a three/four year old Cayenne Turbo for pulling the trailer....

When and if I chop in my sports cars for a proper track day machine...

Quite right Don.

I too quite fancy a Cayenne Turbo as a sensible car in 4 years time for a fraction of it's original cost.
