Well soon I wil have sorted out my part ex ont he fazer after the NEC if I don't sell it private

So I went to JHS in Keynsham today to ask about prices for PC3, air filter and exhaust and then get the Triple dyno'ed once its all run in.

I love the look of the M4 exhuat on the triple and have read many very good reviews on this exhaust but its not road legal. but it does not say "not for road use" on it.

http://www.m4exhaust.com/products/flash/M4_Exhaust...

the other is a leo vince exhaust, also nice but would be my second exhust after the M4. its road legal with removable baffel.
http://www.sitogroup.com/servlet/page?_pageid=114&...

Just my worry on how will I get away with the non legal exhaust on the road??

I heard the M4 is not hugely loud and gives the best power output throught he rev range

thoughts ??

The issues as far as I see it are the police, the mot and the insurance.

The police may or may not pull you over... plenty of people seem to get away with it but the risk is there. I don't know what the penalty is but can't imagine it's that bad. The worst side to this (imo) is that you spend a load on a system, get pulled, given a producer, have to get the bike mot'd with a standard exhaust and take the docs to the station. No worries but what do you do then? Do you put the full system back on and if you do what happens if you get pulled again?

Mot is easy to get past. Either take it somewhere understanding or switch to a standard pipe for the day.

Insurance is more complex. Some people on here have their race pipes declared to the insurance. My insurers have always said that if a pipe isn't road legal not only is it not insured but I'm not insured. In other words it completely invalidates your insurance. Now whether or not that means anything is open to debate. In practice does it mean that they won't pay third party costs if you plough in to a group waiting for a bus or not? They probably will but can you be sure... no.

In short the only way to be sure you're on solid ground is to have a road legal exhaust and that this is one of those decisions you have to take for yourself as you're taking any associated risks wink

My choice has always to take the legal route as I do a few miles and the hassle isn't worth a bit of extra noise and I don't need any more power. I've got illegal cans on the 748 at the moment but they will go back to standard partly because of the above and partly because they're just too loud for my tastes.

I like the beowulf silencer on my blade. Legal (with baffle), sounds nice, lighter and looks better than standard.

If they're not that loud then you'll be ok on the mot front as you no longer need a kite mark on the silencers to get through an mot... it's purely down to whether or not the mot tester thinks it's too loud and if my 748 can get through one without comment then I think you'd need to be running 6" long silencerless cut slash pipes before you had any issues wink

It's odd really as although non-kite marked may pass an mot they're still strictly not road legal. It would be worth asking an insurer if they require road legal pipes whether by that they mean capable of passing an mot. If they do mean that and you can prove your pipes were definitely on the bike for it's mot then you're laughing.

It's this kind of pissing about, however, that I simply can't be arsed with wink

With regards to insurance, you wouldnt be able to claim for damage to the pipe, above and beyond repair costs would be for a stock pipe.
Provided theres no BhP increase, theres little else the insurers can do. If there is a big BhP hoick they may try to invalidate your damage cover. If you kick up a fuss generally they will make you pay an additional premium and then pay the claim.
Third party cover cannot legally be affected.
The fact that its legal or not is irrelevant. You must have an MOT to drive on the road. If you have an MOT - your bike cover isnt affected. You have to hand over the MOT cert when you make a claim. If its valid, theres nothing they can say.
I personally dont view the 6bhp increase that my Scorpion can provides as a material fact. Its cheaper to replace the can off ebay than pay my excess, so i wouldnt be claiming for it anyway.

To be frank....... Mmmmmmmm Betty the cat's done a shit in my Arai....

No really, with the amount of exhausts doing removable baffles these days, you'd be silly not to choose that route. Many cops don't care too much about a race can, but should you do something wrong, they can and will add it to the list of offences.

It's true that a fully illegal race can would be a bit lighter, and add a couple of BHP more than a removable baffle item, but you'd never actually notice that missing 2bhp (that you never had anyway)

This is the view most people take but if you don't declare the can at the time of insurance then your insurance isn't valid because you've taken out the contract by misleading them. You may find that they do exactly as you describe but if you take out insurance by providing the incorrect information they surely can simply pull the rug out from under you... it's a two way legal contract after all and if you've mislead them to get cover then why would they have to keep their side of the bargain? Every time you phone these guys up they read out they read out this type of "mislead us and you're not insured" type stuff so it's not even as if we can claim ignorance.

I think I shall see what the original pipes are like before making the choice.

Also seems they don't do a PC3 yet for the 07 speed triple. hope they get that sorted for the 08 bikes

I bought a set of M4 retro slip-ons for my ZZR1400. Will install them over the winter. Ebike insurance allows you to add loads of mods to your policy including pipes, power commander etc.

sorry to bring this back up.

been looking and will be going road legal with removable baffle. right now i got that sorted I love the look of the Zard on the triple

But also been thinking of going the full system in Titanium eek I know
after talking to a few triple owners in the US it seems the same system in the US cost is about the same in $ as it is in £ or about £500 different.

if I was going to go full system, and thats a if. would it be worth going via a US dealer??

After paying carriage, VAT and admin costs, the chances are your saving would be wiped out. Also, if you have any problems any warranty may be void.

Plus in most cases it's probably cheaper to replace a race can than the original road legal exhaust anyway.....
