I have just purchased a 95 Chim 4.0. All seems well appart from the usuall heat probs. This being my first Chim I am looking to check confirm a few points.

1. I Have two fan switches. The first is the usual silver one on the left of the dash, and the second is on the drivers side just in from of the bonnet release. Is this a fan override.I have tried it and it did not seem to switch the fan on. However I have heard seen the fan come on.
2. My normal running tempreture for traffic/in town travel seems to be at 90 deg. and for mortorway it it drops to between 70 -80 deg. However if it gets to very slow moving traffic, it start to creep towards the red but will cool down if I start to pick up speed. I have heard/read this is fairly normal behaviour.
3. What is the best gas to run it on some people say Shell Optimax other say just use the high 97-98 ron.

Advise much appreciated.

Make sure the fans do actually work, otherwise you will be in trouble if you get stuck in traffic for any reason.

yep, sounds good

sounds like the boot release to me, as far as I'm aware there is not a "standard" fan override switch on the car, I don't have one on mine.

automatically when the otter switch does it I imagine

the fan should hold it at around 90-95 in traffic, but will not manage to cool it belwo that, if you're in 100+ region check your coolant levels etc and is the fan actually on? you can normally just hear it over the engine.

Welcome aboard YumYum. I am sure you'll find this sight more than useful. I certainly have.
In answer to your questions
1.The extra switch is for cold air to the driver.Although not very effiecient.

2. runnign temp sounds about normal to me.Mine reacts in the same way.

3.I find optimax has made a big difference in idleing smoothness.

Think you'll find this switch will turn on/off the dash lighting. i.e. If you need parking lights, you can switch off additional drain of dash lights.

I have an over ride switch of the same pattern as boot/parking lights, but only works when ignition is on - it is fitted to lower steering column housing, behind ignition switch.

Where abouts in Kent?
I have moved to Maidstone in the last 4-5 months.
Temp sounds reasonable to me, just check that the fans are comming on and that they are both working.

If you want to help the cooling a little bit (provided the system is fundanmentally correct) you can try water wetter in the cooling system. Move the number plate so its mounted on the chin rather than the grill (I take it yours is the grill model) this helps the airflow. make sure there is no crap in the rad fins, if there are spray them out with the air gun down at the filling station. Make sure there is no air in the cooling system too.

Happy motoring
Cheers
Alex

No way! Heated seats are great for cruising in the depths of winter top down. PAS is just for southern poofs no matter how you look at it.

My 500 has the wider (PAS) tyres fitted with no PAS just to make it more challenging!

PAS only became fashionable for Tivs when spending city bonuses on porkers became passe and Tivs were the toy to have.

Being a novice, can anyone tell me if its OK to top up the coolant with water or a made up anti freeze/water combo or do I have to empty the whole system and start again. Not sure what is in there already and I just want to make sure I can combine water or a water/ anti freeze combo.

Have just had the car serviced by David Batty meant to ask him and forgot.

The words of a man without PAS. Wait 'til you come to sell ... PAS models appeal to a broader range of buyers, not jut muscle-bound types

If you're topping up small amounts, plain old water will be OK. For larger amounts, add appropriate amounts of water and antifreeze to maintain roughly the right concentration. The exact ratio is not at all critical.

I've got one of those - mine works Fan1, Fan2, Both, But mine is cable tied to the column adjuster. Must get round to fitting it properly!

Have you tried the switch with the ignition on?

This doens't sound right to me.. Does that mean that if you start your cars up on the drive and leave them for 20 minutes they overheat..!? Whilst stationary they should still keep the temerature under 100 surely.. ?

Cheers,
Matt.

Thanks everyone for all the replies. The switch on the drivers side in from of the boot release is a 3 possition so I think it must be the drivers fan as stated.

Once again many thnks for all the info. I am sure I will be back with more questions.
